An uninvited guest

Sorry for the bad picture, he (she?) didn't want to pose and went hiding in the bushes. Unfortunately it is posing on my yard, and I'm not sure my 2yo daughter mixes well with it. My wife saw it again today, so I guess I will need to kill it.

What do you mean "she didn't want to pose" ? Couldn't you just tell her to open up wide and say AH in front of your lens? :)

In the jungle

I think this is a good successor to the previous picture. This one is shot in my back yard, fortunately about a 1000 ft from the viper's sunbathing site. In any case I made her wear rubber boots.

I wish to point out that the vignetting in this image is natural, not photoshopped. I shot it with my camera WB set to tungsten to cool the surroundings a lot, had SB-800 mounted on camera with Full CTO gel and the zoom head set to 85mm for a narrow beam, to warm my model only back to daylight WB. The lens is Sigma 50/1.4 @ f/1.4.

Why kill it?? Call the zoo, or animal control. They'll come and get it. Why do we always have to kill??

It is a common European Viper. it is poisonous but not usually lethal, at least not to adults, if one seeks medical help in a timely fashion.

I had to call someone once to remove a large snake from my yard because he was eating all my duck eggs. It was a bull snake and non-leathal. He was caught and taken to an uninhabited place. If it had been a rattlesnake in my yard, I would not hesitate to kill it. When it comes to protecting the things you love (pets and/or 2 yr olds), there just is no other choice, IMHO. Good luck and stay safe.

Someone gave me the advice that vipers have a very sensitive nose, they rely on their sense of smell when hunting and strong smells may repel them. I sprinkled some vinegar at the sunbathing site (which happens to be exactly at my mailbox, good luck mailman) and I also placed a couple of paper cups near there with a little vinegar.

Thus far no sightings in two days. Perhaps it relocated to a less smelly place.
