Anthony gave you a great example above of what a difference true HDR can make. One reasonably priced plug-in that I like for single image simulated HDR is Topaz Adjust. I hope you don't mind but I took your image and ran it through very quickly.

Interesting concept which has been tried before (JPEG2000, JPEG-XR, WebP). The examples on the home page appear to be pretty good. I tried it on one image - see below. Original JPEG as output from Lightroom (179,238 bytes) JPEGmini online conversion (118,539 bytes)
