That is just bad photography. My D3300 has 1.5EV less DR and I can recover upto 5EV from shadows. So unless you are using wrong metering mode or are simply careless, clipping is not possible in most conditions. Here is an example of the shadow...
Realized finally that this lense does no expose with flash correctly. The "distance" as in D and later lenses is not relayed to the camera. So the camera assumes a distance. Had to manually adjust the flash compensation for each distance.

With full frontal flash every thing behind get lighted up, your eye gets distracted from the main subject. With shadows in the background your attention is on the subject.
