You got wintertime? Well lucky you - look at this!

Tried this just before sunrise today as it was -2F when I got up. I decided to blow bubbles from my home office window on the 2nd floor figuring it would give them more time to freeze. Sure enough they froze before they hit the deck below. Unfortunately, the regular bubbles I used from the...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

2014-003: SOOC At the risk of turning this into a "Biblical Characters In Odd Situations" themed 365... Note: I likely would have gotten rid of the leaf in post were this not "SOOC".

    Getty Licensing

I know Getty Image licensing is a hot button for many working photographers. They make money hand over fist while bleeding photographer's of a working wage. I've pulled up threads from Helene and Browncoat and read through them and will do so again. I get it - Getty can be the devil. That...

    Double camera carry?

Thankfully @hark spent most of the walk in front of me. LOL

1st Image Edited properly in Lightroom 5 - Landscape, English Countryside

As someone who has come to the digital darkroom running full speed screaming, "Oh my Lord, that is SOOOOO cool", only to recant all such testimony less than 2 years later, let me say that I totally understand your excitement. There are quite a few people stretching the reality of landscape...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

Well, a journey of 365 miles begins with 1 step, so I wanted to get Day 1 out of the way. There are 3 things I want to concentrate on this year, two of which I mentioned in Helene's thread about 365 challenges (the first two listed). 1. Continue the learning curve I'm on, defining and...

OK, I'm in. Guaranteed this project costs me more than the $50 I might walk away with. LOL

    D600 vs D800

With bracketing it all depends on what you want to do. I've done HDR with both cameras and with everywhere from 3 to 17 bracketed images, the latter done manually. 3 images bracketed at +/-2EV will give you the same edges as 5 images bracketed at +/-1EV, but with the extra images in...

The Backdoor Hippie's Ranchopalooza of Inconsistently Posted Images - 2013 Version

Thanks, @hark. Bokeh is enhanced in post with Color Efex. The Sigma 105mm has nice bokeh, but the detail extraction necessary to make the crystals pop tends to mess with it too much, so you have to put some back.

The Backdoor Hippie's Ranchopalooza of Inconsistently Posted Images - 2013 Version

Woke up this morning to an extremely light dusting of very crystalline snow on the deck. Note to self: This snowflake photography thing isn't as easy as it looks. :) To do it right I'm going to need some extension tubes (this is a rather extreme crop), more patience and a much better...

Nikon vs. Canon for the working photographer

I read this blog on Nikon Rumors today and found it very enlightening. It's essentially one working Nikon photographer's experience in shooting Canon for the first time and his evaluation of the differences. I emphasize "working" because it's about an aspect many of us here don't think about -...

    Ugh. Doing family portrait tomorrow

I tried this very quickly, selected the background away into its own layer, feathered a bit, applied a field blur and then mixed it back in, opacity at about 65% and then a soft mask to smooth the transition. I think it helps diffuse the shadows a bit. Maybe with a little more time spent, care...

    Little help from the community

No crops, and I couldn't get the backlight to do anything but look absolutely faked, but I was able to clean up some of the white balance and other issues in Photoshop and using Nik Viveza and Color Efex Pro. After that just some dodging burning and playing with color balances.

    Snowy Owls, 2013-14

There is an active incursion of Snowy Owls into our area this year. In NJ alone there have been over 2 dozen distinct Snowys identified thus far, and the word is that more can be expected, which would likely set an all-time record for the species in the state. Thus far none have been near us...

As Shot, As Processed and How Could It Improve

There's a great little app for the iPhone called TrueDoF that will calculate the depth of field for you. Set you sensor size in the preferences and then just dial in your focal length, aperture and approximate distance to subject and it will tell you the range of distances for which things will...

    Site Displaying Improperly

The attached screen shot is how the forum has been displaying for me on my Mac since last evening. I'm using Firefox, but it's not necessarily a Firefox issue because it displays fine with FF on my desktop. It also appears fine with Chrome on the Mac. I've reloaded, cleared cache, rebooted...

    Snow Melt Ground Fog

Two days ago we had 6 inches of snow on the ground and below freezing weather. Yesterday temps reached the 60's and did so as well today. I expected to wake up to a layer of ground fog and was surprised not to get it. About 10AM I look out and as the temps reached the high 50's you could see...
