Playing with a 3-Exposure HDR Series

I thought about whether or not to post these in the HDR Challenge but decided to do this separately so as not to clog up the thread. In that thread I challenged folks to try different edits with a 3 shot exposure bracket series (see the challenge thread for the originals). One of the edits I'd...

An HDR (or not HDR) Photo Challenge

So no one misunderstands me, this is truly meant to be a learning exercise. With these three photos, I also have the original HDR image that I produced back in November of 2012 when I took the shots... I'm already happier with what I was able to produce using a single image in Lightroom...

An HDR (or not HDR) Photo Challenge

Earlier today I posted a Tutorial about how to extract all the Dynamic Range you can from a photograph. In it, I questioned whether or not the dynamic range of the current array of Nikon sensors has eliminated the need to use HDR techniques in many cases since the sensors store enough light...

DxO Mark scores D600 vs D610

Granted, I could and would go a lot farther with the image, but that's not my point. My intent was simply to show noise levels at 100% crop and ISO 6400 of an image taken in similar conditions to what @hark is working in, as well as to back up Marcel's comments - not to fully edit a photo...

Do You Really Need HDR When You Have High Dynamic Range?

All That Said, You Can Still Go HDR If you're not convinced, know that you can still go with HDR even though you only have the one image. Step 1 - Import to Lightroom Step 2 - Create as many Virtual Copies as you would like bracketed exposures Step 3 - In the Develop Module, change...

Do You Really Need HDR When You Have High Dynamic Range?

Do You Really Need HDR When Your Sensor Already Has High Dynamic Range? Scott had posted a thread called "Why HDR?!" earlier this week with a really fine example of how HDR photography can really change what you see in a photograph. I am by no means an anti-HDR person, in fact I used to shoot...

DxO Mark scores D600 vs D610

I happen to fire these off last night at a Leo Kottke show. These were all taken from what I'm guessing is about the same distance and similar conditions to what you're dealing with. I shot this with a D600 and 24-120mm f/4, and this is at ISO 6400 and f/5, matrix metered, no exposure...

    Patterns & Shapes

You can't get #3 totally straight. Lens profile correction will fix part of #1, but there are still horizontal and vertical components. If you are in LR5 you can use the Auto or Full correction buttons as well as they will fix the perspective issue, and if you're in LR4 then there are Vertical...

    Some Stunning Daylight Long Exposures

That's my biggest complaint, @skene - I have maybe 2 or 3 decent places to shoot long exposures like this withing 45 minutes of me, at least that I know of. I'm not bound and determined to find more. There have to be some spots along the Delaware River that would provide for something like this.

    Some Stunning Daylight Long Exposures

Something to aspire to for all of us who have ever stuck a 9-10 stop ND filter on our cameras. Thinking about maybe picking up a second. The Ethereal Long Exposure Photography of Darren Moore | Colossal https://www.flickr.com/photos/61094835@N07/

Continuing on about sharpening and detail extractions, here are a series of 3 exports of the above photo from a quick re-edit. You can see how the each of the adjustments impacts the overall sharpness of the image. Image 1 - Light Level Adjustment Only Image 2 - onOne Perfect Effects 8...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

I'm glad you like the photo. I stumbled on this place this weekend and went back this morning. This was taken on a very bouncy bridge, and to get it clear I had to shoot on self timer with a 20 second delay taking 2 photos, because the first photo would still show the effects of the bridge...

Well, at least Nikon came clean under pressure

Canon Reportedly Charges Customers for Repair of Flawed Lenses With Known Issues - The Phoblographer My brother just paid $400 because his 5D got water damage in a situation that should have been no sweat for most DSLR's. I'm wondering if it's one of those unacknowledged problems?

Newark Star Ledger Cuts 80% of Photo Staff

Just got word from my brother that he's on his way out. I'm leaving lots of details out, but what's not mentioned in this NYTimes article is that while 40% of the newsroom staff is gone, 8 of the 10 full time photographers were let go, including my brother who had 19 years, one East Coast...

    Attn. Instagram Users

Just wanted to give anyone with an Instagram account a heads up that MeFoto has been giving away free stuff every Friday for anyone tagging them in their photos. The current giveaway is for their Sidekick, a tripod attachment to hold a Smartphone. Not sure how often I'll use it, but mine...

    DIY Quick Release Strap

I've always been a person who likes a traditional camera strap, and the Domke Gripper is my favorite as it manages to hang onto my shoulder no matter what I'm wearing. But, I do enough tripod and inside stuff where straps can get in the way, swing in the wind, etc., that there are times I want...

Setting up a Basic Infrared Workflow

(I was tempted to call this, "How I Can Fart Out Edits With Infrared", thanks to a comment that @Pretzel made in another thread, but I decided to be a little less playful. :) I had originally wanted to put this in the tutorial section, but since it requires moderation first, and I need to...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

I'd been caching away several images for the March Abstract contest, trying to decide exactly what I wanted to enter while trying to finish some things before the end of the month. I have to say that there were some phenomenal images submitted this month that cover a wide gamut of what folks...
