    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

Our resident Red Squirrel popped out 6 young ones this year, and they've only now started making their way around into the yard. They're much bigger this year than in years past, and a larger bunch, so I suspect the mother kept them in a little longer to let the smallest one get to size...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

Yes, a chipmunk. They come up on the deck to be fed peanuts. We feed them by hand, but it's tough to hand them a nut and take a photo at the same time. It does make for the occasional territorial squabble...

Got lots of snaps (and real pics) from the past couple weeks that I've been trying to get around to post-processing. Here are a couple quick ones from yesterday. Backyard Turkey Trot Not-so Humungous Fungus

Second ever capture of an oriole

We get them every year, and even had one nest in the yard about 15 years ago, but they are very infrequent visitors. So infrequent that hearing them early in the morning when the windows are open has made my wife jump out of bed to run downstairs and try and see them. Here's a pair of them...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

A facade I've wanted to shoot for a while but never had the right day. Sort of got it here. I have a bunch of crops, but so far I like this one best.

    One model, three portraits

Since we're taking turns... I decided that if the light was going to be there then blow it out so you lose the details and give it meaning. I brought out some definition in the hair, applied a vignette centered on her face and darkened anything dark that was outside of her. I then selected...

Nik Analog Efex Pro 2 available

Saw on another forum that Google has released Nik Analog Efex Pro 2. Normally this is supposed to update automatically, but this never seems to happen for me so I just downloaded and installed the new version. The interesting thing is that I now have both Analog Efex Pro and Analog Efex Pro 2...

    NIKON 70 - 200mm f4

@hark just went through a situation where she wound up canning her Sigma 70-200mm because it wasn't performing well. She opted for the 70-200mm f/2.8 as she has specific low light needs. Perhaps she can add details. You're talking 1 stop, which in certain situations is a big deal. But high...

    Lightroom 5 versus Elements 11 / Camera Raw 7.4

Gosh, I don't know if I'd go that far (LOL). But since a picture is worth 1000 words, in an attempt to make it even better... Here is an image opened up in Full ACR via Photoshop... ...and here is the same image opened up in the "lite" version using PSE 11... If you'll look at the tool...

    Backyard Birding

Very cool, Rick. We're extremely fortunate where we are. It's not a large yard (1/2 acre total space), but we're backed to a field, so the backdrop isn't required. The lack of neighbor activity also helps keep them in the yard once we get them. Over the 20 years we've been here we've...

    Vixens 365 Project 2014

Great idea, and extremely well executed!! I really like it. That said, I'm finding the remnants of the dot pattern a little distracting in the bokeh in the wider stripes (mainly at the top in the blues and magentas). But outside of perhaps shooting at f/2.8 and focus stacking a bit I'm not...

    NIKON 70 - 200mm f4

I chose it over the f/2.8 for wallet and back reasons. Not a regret in the world. @hark has had some IQ issues with the Sigma and upgraded to the f/2.8. Grab the f/4 and don't look back. Great lens.
