    The Big Deal is back!!

Last year it was a 5 Day deal. This year it's a little longer and consists of different stuff. Essentially it's $99 for over $4000 worth of books, videos, lessons, presets, etc. with 20% of it going to charity. Last year's deal was worth it just for introducing me to Lynda.com (which isn't a...

    Post your favorite Lightroom presets...

Right? Or any piece of metadata. Right now the only customizable way to apply on import is based on camera serial number. Even that's great because I can apply my IR profile (instead of Camera Neutral) so I can actually white balance the RAW file. Looking at the import dialogue I can see...

Will Nikon ever give us AF fine tune for zoom lenses?

To give you an idea of what it's capable of, here's a screenshot from Sigma's Optimization Pro software from a blog my brother did about the Sigma 120-300mm and some issues he had with it focusing on his Canon 1D Mark IV (feel free to read the entire thing if you're into the details of focus...

Creating Zone System Layers/Masks in Photoshop

I wish this was a tutorial, but I'm stumped. Essentially what I'm trying to do is to create either layers or layer masks that would take Ansel Adams' Zone System and apply it to a digital image, splitting it into the 0-10 light ranges. Luminosity masks can get me part of the way there, but...

    Resizing Photos For This Site

@sonicbuffalo in LR make sure that in the Metadata section of your export the pull-down is set to All Metadata. There's an option in there for Except Camera & Camera RAW data and I suspect you may have inadvertently switched it to that. Here's the weird thing, if I right-click on your image...

    Do you straighten your photos?

Yes, the crown molding still about 1/2 degree skewed (in reality 0.3 degrees) as you can see from this screen shot... The original was a difficult fix because you had both crooked and converging lines. The good news is that the rug line is about the same degree of skew... ...so using Free...

Flickr now is auto tagging my stuff.

Same as everyone else - Beta tags added, new Photostream options. Not in any way happy. Here's an example of the madness: Photo: Tags: Of the tags added, some are out and out wrong, some are redundant, and some I just don't want. Please show me how the hell to turn this off!!

    Getting it out.

BTW, you need to fix the date on your camera - the D810 wasn't around in March 2014. ;)

    D750 Hot Shoe

The D750 is ergonomically different from every other Nikon I've owned and I suspect that change in design caused/facilitated the add'l gap at the top. I don't think it was necessarily intentional to leave the gap, it's just that the prism housing on the D750 sits slightly lower and there's a...

    D750 Hot Shoe

Saw this on NikonRumors today... Phottix: the Nikon D750 hot shoe has different dimensions than previous camera models | Nikon Rumors ...and it has me very curious about the compatibility of the D750 with other triggers. Not to mention that it also has me curious as to why they changed the...

Lightroom CC/6 and what you're not get from GPU Acceleration

Saw this article today. Seems the GPU acceleration benefits may have been more than slightly overstated. Funny, but when I think back on the Kelby/Concepcion back-and-forth about it on the release webcast they really didn't say anything specific about it other than what it does for 4K monitors...

What are your top 5 tweaks in lightroom?

Every image is different, but... My workflow is generally LR -> Photoshop (which includes the Nik Collection) -> LR, and there are adjustments done in LR on both ends. Occasionally there's next to nothing to do in PS, so when I say "after editing" below that means normal light edits to a...

    LR 6/CC Update

Apparently they've released a bug fix for LR. If CC hasn't pushed it yet just go to Help->Updates in your LR menu. I'll tell you this, they've certainly fixed the update process for LR. In LR5 you had to download the entire app which was approaching 1GB. This took all of 15 seconds to apply.

onOne Perfect Browse 9 for free

If you're looking for a quick way to import, tag and rate your images this may work for you. LR didn't seem to improve the import and build preview function all that much if you're using full sized previews, so if you've got a ton of images to cull through this may be a better option. Or if...

How to process a certain style

The most important thing is a well lit and properly exposed photo to start with. Something like that can certainly be done in LR alone, but not necessarily with that image. I used Photoshop to fix white balance and add some blur, Nik Color Efex to add reflector lighting from the front and do...

    camera settings for static birds

How do you get it correct? Either shoot it on an overcast day and worry about making the sky blue later, or put a giant reflector opposite the sun so you can light the shadowy area on the bird. That, or actually consider the fact that you're not done with a photo when you image pops up on...

LR CC HDR Merge - A bit of an oversell

So like a lot of folks I pulled down LR CC yesterday and watched the Scott Kelby & RC Conception webcast yesterday. I knew about the HDR and Panorama merge functions, but I was pretty stoked when I found out that it saved the files as 32-bit DNG "RAW" files. For the pano's this is awesome and...
