An old thread from 2015, so the original poster is not likely to see. Yes, a battery needs to be in the camera all the time. A day or two will not likely be a problem, but longer will cause problems like the original poster described.

My en el15 batteries through the years seldom show 100% charge. Even right out of the charger they often show 97% or even a little less. I’m not sure why, but they always function fine and have good life.

There were problems with sticking zoom on that lens, but I haven't heard that complaint for quite a while, so maybe they addressed it in production. I had to have the VR fixed once when I owned that lens. Not a bad lens for the price. Certainly better than the Tamron 150-600 in my experience...

Recently out of the nest, these two Barn Swallow fledglings were sticking close together.
