    Beehive Cluster, The Moon and Jupiter in mid October.

    It looks like it would be in a 50mm to 100mm lens required to capture in 1 frame, by estimate looking at the Stellarium phone app. I would have to check on the actual PC software to verify. The moon would look rather small in the image.

    D780 locking up

    It feels like some release mode was active. Release on focus can behave that way. If this was early afternoon you were shooting towards the sun in the problem directions.

    D780 locking up

    It's a variable in the equation. You have the best available battery.

    Are you running an original Nikon EN-EL15 or is it an aftermarket battery?

    Software Suggestions

    @Vixen I continue to use RawTherapee and GIMP as my editing tools. GIMP just this year was finally updated to 3.xx version that has been promised for years. Think of RawTherapee as the replacement for Lightroom and GIMP as replacement for Photoshop. Not all the tools are available, but all the...

    Walked away from another good photo today.

    Once again, for reasons, I had to drive off from a photo without trying to take the picture. We all have done this many times I would assume. I usually feel down for a while because of it. Today it was a rustic log cabin near a pond that caught my eye as I drove down a back-road on my work...

    FTZ adapter with face/eye tracking

    Should be no problem at all. Z-mount lenses will normally have some advantage being newer and smarter. I think having a wide aperture lens helps most so the body can see the scene better.

    On Lake Michigan shore, a very tiny kite-surfer in infrared. I more expected to be seeing rainstorms today, so I had the infrared D600 and not a long enough lens to use. I am learning that my 24-120mm f/4 is not very appropriate for infrared work, it meters too dark. It will eventually be...

    Shutter Speed on Nikon D5600 live view

    I can understand this happening if you were in video mode when switching to live view and did not notice that. Shutter speed cannot be slower than video frame rate.

    He must have been scared of my Nikon!

    I saw the announcement. I don't think there is any issue with skipping versions. There were only 2 listed fixes on the release notes related to specific settings not being retained after a power cycle.

    Lenses

    Yes the 17-55mm DX lens can be used in a crop mode with the D850. But it will just be using the middle 24MP of that sensor. So not much reason to upgrade from a D500 is there unless you also invest in full-frame lenses?

    Hello and... (am looking for help about NEF}

    Another non-Nikon solution (maybe). https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nctdw2w1bh8?hl=en-us&gl=US It also appears that if you might install something like RawTherapee on you computer for editing, the open-source RawLib extension is installed with that. So that may also make things work.

    Hello and... (am looking for help about NEF}

    Assuming you are viewing with a Windows PC here. Nikon Rumors reported in April about the NEF codec is no longer available to download at Nikon. https://nikonrumors.com/2025/04/08/it-seems-that-nikon-no-longer-offer-nef-nrw-codec-download-option-on-their-website.aspx/ Reddit has a thread about...

    Zoom detail fell short

    @Clovishound I read it with xlFr in Firefox. I'm also running Exify for the hover-view of basic exif info. But I think I see where you are going wrong. First click on his image attachment to view the pop-up full screen image. Then right-click and view exif.

    D750 Remote ML-L3 can't set to 'On'

    The Nikon ML-L3 uses CR-2025 cell in a slide-out holder. I would guess the imitators would try to copy that. I believe the IR sensor of the D750 is not as good as other cameras. I originally bought my remote for a D80, and have also used sparingly for a D7000, D750. I never liked that IR remote...
