My tiny first steps are now live.

And it feels really good to have my work be put to its intended use. I've been covering my friend Christian's live painting sessions for about half a year now and my shots finally made it onto his site after a major update. The front page, And the Live Painting events page, And now I...

    Flash commander mode?

So does 600 have a proper wireless one built-in or just a more formal optical that HAS to use the onboard one to trigger others?

Didn't realize that Nikon does in fact care about us

Can't think of a better sub to post this in, but I never realized that crop mode on FF bodies was almost exclusive to Nikon. Such a simple feature that lets you recycle your DX gear even after you make the FF jump, yet Canon totally screws it customers by saying no. That said, well, why do...

Some inspiration and a reality check

How I Transitioned from Being a Hobbyist to Being a Pro Photographer Really have to agree with that article, also I got a better idea for a personal goal and seeing exactly how far I am from getting there. Really got to start re-working lots of my stuff and getting my s together or I'll never...

35 1.8 DX on FX, in FX mode - impressive!

Absolutely had to try this out since it's sadly my only >f/2 lens in my current lineup, and boy does that help in low light. So how bad is vignetting when using this in straight-up FX mode? Hardly any! And this is with vignetting removal off. This definitely makes my day instead of being...

    Body value depreciation

Read some guy on DPR board complaining how his D4 lost so much value on the street market in mere 2 years, and it made me remember looking up what used 5100s go for these days (in a mere year of my ownership of a fresh one) - about 50-60% of the original value. Unlike that guy though, I feel...

    Aaand found & bought a decent 600.

2073 clicks, purchased refurb in the past 6 months according to the seller. No dust or oil, but now we have this for sure- http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Service-And-Support/Service-Advisories/hs309y82/Technical-Service-Advisory-for-Users-of-the-Nikon-D600-Digital-SLR-Camera.html So can't wait to...

    Extra stop or AF?

Thinking what to try and get for my jump into the FX realm and I can think of 3 viable choices- 50 1.4G for decent all-aroundness; 55 1.2 AI because, 1.2 creamy nightscapeness; some basic zoom to have the power of zoom indoors w/ flash that I missed so much since I sold my only standard zoom a...

    D610 vs D800 question

Seeing how I've reached my 5100's limits in a year, I'm now starting to debate a 610 vs 800 looking back at the same debate I had over 5100 vs 7000 a year some ago. 610 I'll be able to afford right off the bat, whereas it would take some scraping for a used 800 in decent shape. Performance and...

    Acceptable RAW ISO noise range?

Since I'm thinking of jumping on 610 as soon as taxes come back, the most crucial question that lingers is how the ISO performance is with RAW files. On my 5100, I would say the reasonable limit is 320 since at 400 and up I REALLY have to smooth out the noise sacrificing precious sharpness. So...

Possible upgrade depending on tax returns.

Premature thought, but I might as well have a solid idea in the back of my head for whenever that time comes- what to get as a proper shooter over my 5100? Majority of my lenses are FX and I'm getting tired of the crop factor (itching to see what my lenses truly can see). That and better ISO...

    One of those, $5 lenses.

Quite literally, but for what I got it for - basic macro, so far so good all things considered. 5 x 5 ? A Bargain Experiment (CPC MC 70-162mm f/3.5 AUTO ZOOM Macro) | SKVORA LIMITED TL:DR- $5 lens bought as is, tests begin starting with macro extension and well, some macro style shots:

So many adventures, woes, successes and milestones achieved. Going from desperate desires for any kind of good lens with $50 budget to getting even my dream 45mm AI-P. Might just write a proper, detailed story on my blog, so a brief snip here will do for now. Also up to about 44533 actuations...

Some quality time under a new light

Since my dad isn't getting any younger, I appreciate every proper time we get to bond together. Shooting opened new dimensions in all of my hobbies, and boarding is no longer an exception- https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.589859184416583.1073741907.434528646616305 And vice-versa...

To zoom or not to zoom indoors?

Been noticing how LOTS, and LOTS of pro/semi-pro photogs in DC area use basic zooms + flash indoors almost exclusively. Quite a few, just stick to kit-level stuff for years and don't really look back or anything. That got me thinking that perhaps I'd like to get an 18-70 once again, since I've...

So, my 5100 hit its first birthday on Friday.

The little bugger went through hell and back over this year and I can’t quite think what I haven’t tried to shoot with it. As of the very last shot on Thursday, the shutter count was 43543 via CameraShutterCount.com. That quite the mileage I put on it in just a year- far more than I used to...

    Bresson Split Focusing Screen

Bresson Split Focusing Screen – Nikon D5100 | SKVORA LIMITED After much research and decision, I went with an ebay purchase from China. The brand is Bresson and they seem to make a ton of these resin focusing screens for most of the DSLRs out today. Here is their product page for these nifty...

So got Yongnuo WJ-60 for all sorts of shenanigans

Another one of "best <$50 I've spent" moments. Works perfectly as a low-light flashlight that I got it for, to help focus in pitch-black situations. Doesn't interfere w/ using a proper flash simultaneously. And I'll test its native purpose some other time. First Impressions
