D3100 | Bulb mode | long exposure photography.

By “ir sensor”, you mean for use of a remote control? Are you sure? I bought this, a few weeks ago, at Target. Actually, I bought two of them, because the price was so spectacularly good. The package lists the D3000 as one of the cameras with which it is compatible. I have the D3200...

    Post your bokeh rich shots!

This was with my ancient non-AI Vivitar 85-205 zoom mounted on my D3200, taking pictures of the sunlight through some trees, intentionally out of focus, just to produce a pure bokeh effect. There' also a bit of a flare in this picture. Taking the concept a bit farther, last night, I made...

Is bad photography really that in vogue?

Not so difficult, if you have one of these…

What’s Your Color Vision Deficiency? Take the Test.

Just now, I got this result… A few years ago, I got this result… I suspect that this test is as much a test of the subject's monitor and patience as it is of the subject's eyes. I probably have a better monitor now than I did in early 2010. I faintly remember, when I took this...

    Protective case for your camera?

To me, it seems highly dubious whether the sort of cover under discussion here would provide much protection at all; and I think the point is valid about sand and other foreign material getting between the cover and the camera body. I can certainly wish for a case for my D3200 that would...

    Star shooting is hard!

Here's Orion again. And below it, near the bottom of the picture, just to the left of the trees, is a bright star that must never be treated frivolously or taken lightly.

    Star shooting is hard!

With two different of my old non-AI lenses mounted on my D3200… The Orion constellation Nikkor 28mm ƒ3.5 lens, 10 seconds at ƒ3.5, ISO 400 Orion's sword, including the nebula Vivitar 85-205mm ƒ3.8 zoom lens, at 205mm; 4 seconds at ƒ11, ISO 6400

    Star shooting is hard!

I've found that the stock 18-55mm lens that came with my D3200 just doesn't work for this kind of photography. It's nearly impossible to get it properly-focused at infinity. I took these pictures using some of my ancient non-AI lenses from my F2. Alas, I do not know for sure what lenses I...

    Let's see some anaglyph 3D…

Odd, that less than 24 hours after I started this thread, I was at a Target store, and I saw this:

    Post your panoramic shots.

Night, and most of the outside lights are out tonight. Panorama stitched using Microsoft ICE from six (6) individual photographs; each one a thirty(30) second exposure at ƒ16, ISO 6400. Nikon D3200, on a tripod, turned in portrait-orientation, with the stock 18-55mm (approximately equivalent...

    Let's see some anaglyph 3D…

Break out your red/blue glasses, and let's see some 3D pictures. I made this one with two pictures taken with my D3200, and processed using Anaglyph Workshop. The object pictured here is a magnetron, out of an old microwave oven. I have some older anaglyphs, that I made on my cell...

    50mm 1.8G vs. 35mm 1.8G?

A possible better way might be to analyze the EXIF data in pictures that she's already taken, to see what focal lengths she's been using. I'm assuming that the D5100, like my D3200, saves, in the EXIF data of each picture that it takes, the focal length to which the lens is set that took it...

Cannot get Bracelet to be in Focus

I am, in general, in agreement with what nearly everyone else here has said. Use a tripod, if necessary, a slow shutter speed, if necessary, and a small aperture setting to get greater depth of field. This is probably the best way, by far. There is one other way, that someone hinted at, but...

    Post your Fungi shots

Not taken through my Nikon, I'm afraid. I have yet to work out making my DSLR work with my microscope. These were all taken through my microscope, with a cheap Sakar camera.

    Post your flower pics

I guess they've probably always been there, but just today, I first noticed these very tiny flowers in a grassy area near my apartment. Those are normal-sized blades of grass that you see surrounding this flower, to give you some idea of just how small this flower is.
