Vote for Weekly Challenge DEC 28 - JAN 3: "Animal Magic"

Congrats Marcel! I was just pleased I unintentionally took a photo that was on-topic this round.

Re f-stop: Using shutter-priority auto exposure so that is where it landed because of cloudy conditions. At the distance to subject, DOF was no issue. A good deal of cropping going on with my photos. But going to 1/1000 would have pushed the ISO up another stop and the early shots had more noise...

I just did this New Years day. Nearly the same hardware too. Heavy-duty tripod with a Sirui K40 ballhead and Wimberly Sidekick gimbal adapter. I have a Z5, FTZ-II, Sigma 150-600mm C lens. I was shooting eagles at a dam spillway. Personally, I am not too proud to use auto-exposure. I had ISO to...

    PM

Two ways to send a PM that I see. First click on the name of a user you see in a thread and then click on the "Start Conversation" button. Second way I noticed is to click on the envelope icon next to your user name in the top-right part of the forum screen. I just did the first method to see...

    Head's up for a comet around 1-29-2023 to 2-1-2023

This one is forecast to brighten to just naked-eye visible around the last week of January 2023. During this time it will appear in the sky to the north, right in there with the Big and Little Dippers. It may take a long telephoto lens to photograph it well. It will be less than half as bright...

I put my Wimberly Sidekick to the test today. I was taking action photos of eagles 1-handed with my coffee mug in the left hand. Didn't do it that way all morning, but until the coffee ran dry anyhow. :p

@Peter7100 : I took a photo with a very similar theme in 2021 on a day with freezing fog. You did everything better than I did.

Post your favorite shot of 2022

It's a tough call. I put this photo on the cover of my 2023 calendar. I think 2022 was one of my best years of photography, and I did not set out with that as a goal.

I have only been planning this photo out for 3 years, but still did not get what I set out to do. I think I needed about 3x as many exposures (or more) to get the nebulae around Orion to show.

    Remote shutter release

I just tried to google what that item is. Need more information because there are several different products to choose from. Is this a simple IR remote with just a single button? Is it a radio device that requires another item to be connected to the camera? Is it an intervalometer with a LCD...

    Looking at a Sigma 150/600

I think most users have the Contemporary model rather than the Sports version you link to. They have differences. I like the "C" a lot and consider it a price-performance overachiever. As I understand, the "S" is nearly 2x the price, a lot heavier, and better weather sealing. Focus is supposed...

    First Nikon & First DSLR

Welcome AJB! I went from a Minolta xd-11 to a D80 over 15 years ago. No matter how complex the features, the exposure triangle still is the same and the basis for good photos. Enjoy the learning.
