Talk me out of getting the 80-400 Nikkor!

OK, so I've set my sights on upgrading my 70-300, and am seriously considering the new 80-400 Nikkor. Can anyone convince me NOT to get it?

    Ye Olde-Fashioned Corn Harvest

OK, the title is a bit of a misnomer. Yes, there was supposed to be a 1900-era corn harvest today, but rain the last few days kinda put a damper on it. But I went anyway and managed to get some cameo shots of a by-gone era. I also got to take the 24-120 out for a test drive!

The Past, Framed by the Present: Part 2

Tonight, I happened to be going by the courthouse again, and the weather was 'just right' for a retake of the shot of my grandfather taken back in the early 1900's. Clouds to the west kept harsh shadows off the town square, yet some nice clouds and blue sky to the east for some modern color...

Tokina 17mm reversed on a Nikon PB-6 bellows

For those of you who shoot with bellows, you're probably aware that reversing lenses gets you higher magnification. I've been shooting with an old 28mm 2.8 Ai-S lens for over a year now, and have reached mags close to 7:1. I read Nikon's chart where they stated a 20mm reversed would get to...

    Now DAT'S PURDY!

Scored a mint-condition 24-120 f/4 Nikkor this past weekend. Gonna make y'all cry, too: $700.

The Past, Framed by the Present

In my scanning in all the old family photos, I came across one I thought would make a unique project. It's of my grandfather, in his younger years, 'striking a pose' on the lawn of the courthouse where he grew up. So this morning, I took that old photo with me to the same courthouse, and...

I should have my head examined!

After finishing scanning in almost 10,000 slides this year, I embarked on yet another folly today: Scanning & digitizing all the old family photos. Boxes & boxes..... mostly B&W from the '70s dating back to at least 1914!

    I Red-Lined my D600 tonight

I never bought the D600 with the intention of cranking up the ISO. In almost a year of ownership, I think I've gone as high as 3200. Until tonight. My cousin plays music at local gigs, so I decided to stop by and see what the D600 can do in low light. I figured I might have to go to 6400...

    In Honor of Heroes

A nearby FD has a memorial to both a local fallen hero, as well as the 343 firefighters & paramedics who died 9/11/01. It includes a statue dedicated to Mike Mercurio, who died of a heart attack after fighting a fire, as well as a portion of a steel beam from one of the WTC towers. I took some...

    Tokina 17/3.5 SL

Found myself a little gem last week, and picked it up at the PO this morning: A Tokina 17mm f/3.5 SL ultra-wide. Although I have a 17-35 2.8 Nikkor AF-D, I was looking for something more compact in the ultra-wide range for when I want to travel light. I put both the 17 and my 17-35...

My 10-stop and VND went out for a test drive yesterday.

Took a bit of time yesterday and took my two new NDs (B+W 10-stop and Singh-Ray VND) out for a test drive. Since we don't have a lot of waterfalls here in Cornpatch, I used the next-best thing.... fountains. First off, I like to find the 'sweet spot' of my lenses, and try to shoot at that...

F1, OK KButton and Shooting Mode

Have been revisiting some of the features I haven't explored on the D600, and am having trouble understanding the F1/OK Button setting. I've tried all three choices, and none of them make any different when I'm shooting. Pressing the OK Button does nothing. What am I missing?
