    Woody's Hermosa Luz 2026

There are times I am hope for someone, or something to come along and spook the bird I'm sitting on so that I can get an in flight shot.

Lens caps, right side up, or doesn't matter.

From a practical point, as long as it is secure, it doesn't matter. If it makes you feel better, go for right side up. If you have to stop 4 times on the way home from a shoot to dig into your gear to double check that the cap is oriented "correctly", that is another matter. ;)

Sadly, no skimmers today, just hummingbirds. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. Ever wonder why some hummingbirds have pollen on the top of their heads? Last of the string. WHY couldn't I have hung onto the shutter for another fraction of a second??????

    Nikon 200-500mm and beyond infinity.

For one thing, on a zoom lens infinity focus may change as the focal length changes. On primes it's probably a cost thing, as each lens would have to be calibrated for focus ring stop, and likely have some extra machining to allow adjustment. This normally only becomes a factor when focusing in...

Edited another couple skimmer images. I found I really enjoyed shooting skimmers. You can see them coming and get ready. I would love to get some actually catching a fish. A lady from my nature photography club brought an image she got here last month of one with a fish, lots of spray. It was a...

Hello I'm An Experienced Hobbyist (Former Professional)

Welcome. We look forward to seeing some of your work. I have found this to be a very helpful forum over the last few years. Lots of knowledgeable folks willing to share. We run the gamut from newbies to very experienced and talented folk. I too, started off with film more years ago than I care...

Took a long lunch today, something happened.

I think you will like the internal zoom feature of this lens. I was previously using an F mount 200-500 Nikon and an FTZ adapter. It worked well, was remarkably sharp for the price point. I think the AF is a little faster with the 180-600 and it is slightly sharper. I really like not having to...

Took a long lunch today, something happened.

I got the 180-600 this last Christmas. I was looking at either this lens or the 600mm F6.3PF. I went with the zoom for the flexibility, and closer minimum focus distance. I have not regretted deciding for the zoom.

Took a long lunch today, something happened.

I've had the Z8 for over a year. I absolutely love it. I shoot mostly wildlife and macro. My Z7ii is relegated to macro work, and a backup camera. The AF and other features of the Z8 is a real game changer for a lot of wildlife shooting. There's no way I could have gotten some of the BIF shots...

Finally made it out to Magnolia this weekend. I've been making do with backyard photography while my wife heals from her fall and surgery back in June. At first I thought it was going to be a bust. Only one duck in the swamp, and all the nesting birds have flown the coop. Went down to the large...

Here's another of those surprising tag a longs. I had no idea it was there until I started editing the images I took this morning. I like the pose of the bird on the first one, but the spider looks a little strange due to the angle. the second has a much better angle on the spider, but not so...

    my first lens

A lot depends on what you are planning on shooting. I'm primarily a wildlife photographer and if I could only have one lens, it would be my long telephoto. If I were into street photography or landscape, it would be something different. I would recommend getting a native Z mount lens. They are...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets 2026

I was set up to get some hummingbird shots, and saw this guy looking at me from the other side of the bird seed feeder. It looked really interesting, so I burned a few electrons to get it. I just wish it was not something like an ugly plastic bird feeder, but it's very unlikely that a bird would...

I almost didn't edit the first one. It's not quite sharp. My wife was looking over my shoulder and said to go back to it. I went ahead and ran it through Topaz and it is probably sharp enough for the internet. I do like the pose. I also like the last one of the hummer on a branch. Probably...
