    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets 2026

Interesting day. The Pup and I drove up to the zoo, and got there shortly after it opened. I quickly made my way over to the otters. Tripped on some terraces and scraped my knee, shin and elbow. Looked at my left hand and the tip of my ring finger was pointing up at a 30 to 45 degree angle...

Unfair expectations of Tamron 24-70 lens, or issue?

If you are shooting in daylight, a tripod should not be necessary, just make sure to use a fast enough shutter speed, and pay attention to shutter release technique. As to which lens to use, I would say that the 35mm prime would be the lens of choice for me, assuming you have enough room to get...

Unfair expectations of Tamron 24-70 lens, or issue?

When shooting a group shot, you need to be as close to parallel to the line of the group as possible. Also, you want to focus about one third of the distance from the front of the group to the rear. This may require you to use manual focus. Fortunately, with group shots you should have plenty of...

BF Hammer 2026: Me and my Zf

It looks like you may have the same issue, as the extension tubes have a rectangular mask that may interfere with the element of the converter. It's possible there is clearance, but I wouldn't count on it. Even if it did have clearance, you would likely have to be VERY careful when mounting the...

Unfair expectations of Tamron 24-70 lens, or issue?

Well, the last two you posted were taken at 1/40 sec, and appear to be very soft center to edge. My guess is camera shake. The first two were both sharp in the center, and were taken with a rather high shutter speed, which would overcome camera shake. The first posted Tamron image looks sharp in...

Post your favorite April 2026 shot

Very nice, Peter. We don't have many vistas like that in the lowcountry of South Carolina.

BF Hammer 2026: Me and my Zf

If you look at the Nikon Z 1.4 converter, the lens element extends far above the mount. On many lenses this results in the converter lens element contacting the rear element of the lens you are trying to mount. If you look at this picture of the Viltrox converter, it has the same design. I...

    Post your award winning photos

Sorry, she had some trouble with the files, and I decided to post without them, but forgot to delete the last sentence. She finally got them sorted and here they are.

    Post your award winning photos

Well, the Pup and I went to the North Charleston Arts Festival tonight after submitting several images each. Unfortunately, the Pup didn't win any, but had a lot of nice things said about her photos, and she sold one almost right off the bat. The competition this year was much stiffer than last...

    FX - DX confusion

Yes, this is how the engineers designed the system. It will not let you override DX mode with a DX lens mounted. I think this being the default setting when a DX lens is mounted is sound design, but the user should be able to override to FX mode, and use it at your own risk.

    FX - DX confusion

Another issue is that a lot of Nikon FX cameras will not let you use the entire sensor when a DX lens is mounted. I would like to try the Pup's 10-20 DX lens on my Z7ii or Z8 in full frame mode, but it won't let me. I know that I would get vignetting, but that might be a plus for some images. At...

Weekly Photo Challenge - Rules and Guidelines

I believe one of the purposes of the weekly, and monthly challenges is to encourage folks to go out and take photos within certain guidelines. This is often used as a technique in a teaching environment to get people to work outside their comfort zone. This can often help us to try new things...

    Slide to Digital Images

I cannot easily find the holder I made to post a picture. I did find something somewhat similar on the internet. Link below. It has both a negative and a separate slide holder. This holder uses a tube that slides over the smooth barrel of a point and shoot digital. I used a lens hood and cut a...

    Slide to Digital Images

Here's a thread where I made a slide holder out of foamcore and a lens hood. I mounted it on my Z105 micro and used a hand held flash to provide light. I diffused the light with several things. IIRC, setting up white paper or foam core and using the flash to illuminate it worked fine. Slide...

Where do you draw the line with editing?

Here is another one that exemplifies the conundrum we often face when making decisions about how far to go to get the shot the way we want it. This is an image I shot this weekend at Swan Lake. I love the detail in the female mallard and especially like the reflection of the trees on the water...

Swan Lake with the CNPA today. Nothing to stop the Nat Geo presses for, but a few solid shots. I was hoping to get some geese in flight shots today, but all I got was bird butts.
