A week in with my new Zf

I cannot possibly have an in-depth review after so little time, but here are my early impressions and observations. Last weekend was a "Cash 4 Cameras" event locally. A buyer for an Indianapolis-based used camera dealer usually tours through my town and partners-up with the local camera shop...

BF Hammer 2026: Me and my Zf

Stopped at the Matz farm ruins coming home after my last job today. Color photos are processed from RAW, B/W are processed from JPG.

Help with choosing images for a contest

If making me stop scrolling to admire is any gauge, you definitely have to use #2. 5, 7, and 8 can round out your submissions.

The Pup and I are heading to the CNPA convention tomorrow.

You take excellent photos and if the others are even better, you still have every reason to be proud of your work. Unless you truly are the best, there will always be somebody that is going to be better. If you follow my meaning there.

BF Hammer 2026: Me and my Zf

First to share from the new camera. It has been gray and ugly outside interrupted by a blizzard 2 days ago. So let's just start with B&W mode on the Zf and turn on the firmware 3.0 simulated film grain. JPEG right from card, resized smaller, and watermark pasted on.

    Post your latest purchases.

I only have 3 days now hands-on. I not only have previous use experience with the large-grip Nikons, but in my life I have used flat cameras like the Pentax K-1000 (high school photography class) and Minolta xd-11 (first SLR I bought, whole kit from an auction). I learned early to hold with the...

    Post your latest purchases.

With a 2 day trade-in event at my local camera store, I converted a D750, Z5, CoolPix S4000, 24-120mm f/4 lens, Zeiss 15mm Distagon lens, Sigma dock F-mount, and an IR shutter release into a Nikon Df. I am still learning and configuring things. I also have to fix my snowblower to prepare for...

D750 set to manual focus mode & using remote ML-L3 won't fire because the camera does not show ⦁

"Release" is the correct setting, but I think that is what you mean. It's what I was trying to remember in my earlier answer while on lunch break at work. Then there is this in the footnotes for using the ML-L3 remote... Page 195 of the D750 user manual:

D750 set to manual focus mode & using remote ML-L3 won't fire because the camera does not show ⦁

There is a line in the shooting menu for Release on Focus or similar wording. Turn it off, this is active for Auto and Manual focus. Your D750 is working exactly as it should in that mode. The dot indicates the AF sensor thinks you are focused, the triangles are arrows telling you to turn the...

Time Change - Spring Forward 2026

At my home late June there is twilight past 9:30. When I have traveled to the northern end of Wisconsin by Lake Superior there will be daylight past 10pm on DST. I seriously would hate to go to a full-time DST all year as then I would not have sunrise at Christmas until a little past 9am. Just...

    GPS

Nikon Snapbridge app for any wifi enabled body. It can add GPS data to exif if you are using the app actively with camera when you take photos.

Yeah, I prefer to have the sun at zenith at noon instead of 1pm.

Welcome Max. Photography is a hobby you may always be learning about and never quite feel like you have mastered. And that is perfectly normal.

Instagram/Social Media Effects on Wildlife Photography

Weird, I'm listening to the Photography Online podcast at the same time I see this thread. They are discussing this subject also. A bit extra criticism is being directed at the woman who made the video as maybe she also is contributing to the problem.

    Nikon D5300

Welcome! Looking at the samples you want to emulate, I suspect you will be using the Tamron more than the others and living more on the wider end of the zoom range. An alternative to Needa's suggestion of a 24-70 f/2.8 for low light, I would say you might consider tracking down a Sigma 18-35mm...

    Mirrorless in 2026, maybe!

Apologies for stepping into a question meant for Peter. Cons: Shorter battery life, must turn on power switch to compose, lack of pop-up flash on most bodies. That's about it. Pros: You can actually see your composition in low-light, AF works edge-edge, no AF penalty switching to LiveView...

Where do you draw the line with editing?

Let's call it a fuzzy smear instead of a hard, high-contrast line drawn for me. My preference is for more natural images. Some photos need more processing help, others barely need an exposure adjust. Is manipulating objects in a scene during composition fair game? I think so as long as no...

    Viltrox 20mm F2.8 Z mount - Review

Don't underestimate the Chinese lenses. Have you decided if the manual focus is mechanically linked to the focus ring or is it focus-by-wire? What nobody really discusses is that the Nikon Z S-series lenses are not focused by mechanical link, but instead by the autofocus motor from input by the...
