    New owner of Nikon Z

Many photographers prefer the "exposure preview" that an EVF gives. It took me a couple weeks to get used to the EVF vs the traditional optical viewfinder. Once I did, I didn't want to go back. I now consider this one of the major strengths of mirrorless. Of course, we all have our own shooting...

Unable to save as RAW files - solved

I shoot this way. I have my RAW files on the primary card, my newer cameras have CFexpress in the first slot. I have it set to save JPEG in the secondary slot, SD cards. The JPG gives me an easy backup in case something happens to the RAW files. I have yet to need the backup JPEGs, but I started...

Unable to save as RAW files - solved

Set image quality to NEF(RAW)+ JEPG fine. Then back out and go up to "Role played by card in Slot 2". There should be 3 options. The third is "RAW slot 1-JPEG Slot 2". Select this and you should be good to go.

    Long Tele Lens Choice

Well, if it were springtime with all the birds nesting, there would be no question. The outing last week I took to Magnolia, was a little thin on birds. It will probably be Feb or Mar before things start heating up with the birds around here. One of the Wildlife Management Areas south of here...

    Long Tele Lens Choice

Well, it arrived today. Now comes another conundrum. The deal was that I would get some money towards it as part of my Christmas. So, now, do I leave it in the box until Christmas, or do I take it out on an outing or two? I have the go ahead for the latter, but it would be nice to have something...

    Panoramic views

I don't do a lot of panoramas. When I do, it depends on the subject as to whether I stitch verticals or horizontals. I will sometimes crop a single image to an aspect ratio that resembles a panorama, when I feel the subject demands that type of crop. This image comes to mind. I shot a single...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

I probably shouldn't, but for some reason I like this one.

    Long Tele Lens Choice

Well, I have it from reliable sources that a Z180-600 will be under the tree this Christmas.

    Flash for macro work

I've been using the 685 for a while now, as has the Pup with her 350. Both of us have used several different diffusers and eventually settled on the AK. I really haven't bothered much using the flash off camera with the wireless trigger. I probably should make an effort to experiment with it...

Convert (nearly) any image into Nikon NEF raw file

I never thought about uploading an image to my camera. I suppose there are some creative techniques that might require that, but doubt it would be something I would be interested in. Good to know it might be possible. Another thing that comes to mind. The club I belong to has 13 chapters and...

    editing software for newbie

One nice thing about Nikon's software is that it is laid out somewhat similarly to Lightroom. That should make the transition to LR easier, if you decide to move to it later down the road. I will second the idea that learning editing software is a journey, and switching from one to another...

Convert (nearly) any image into Nikon NEF raw file

Interesting, but I wonder why anyone would want to convert a JPG to an NEF file. When you convert an NEF to a JPG, you lose a lot of information. You aren't going to get that back by converting it back to an NEF.

    Auto focus question

Yes, it's a Z50ii. She currently has the Z 12-28 and is using her F mount lenses with an FTZ. IMO, it is a big step up from the D3300. I haven't used it enough myself to be able to say absolutely, but from my little bit of playing around with it, I would say the AF is good to very good. It has...

    Auto focus question

My daughter has the Z50ii. It has many of the features of my Z8. I recently posted about how impressed I was with the image quality. I started off with a D3400, and never regretted moving to mirrorless.

EN-EL25/EN-EL25A batteries, why doesn't Nikon do this?

The Pup is going on a photo trip this weekend. After she went through her primary and spare battery on our zoo trip yesterday, she was afraid she would run out of battery power on the long shooting days she will encounter this weekend. She decided to order an aftermarket battery, since she could...
