    Post your Train shots!

Found another b&w shot from the '70s of an Elgin, Joliet & Eastern caboose in suburban Chicago. I still miss cabooses. :( Even my little EJ&E is gone, recently merged into the enormous Canadian National Railway.

An Adlake switch lock, from my Kodak Plus-X film days probably 40 years ago.

How do I force the flash to go off in manual mode? Help!!!

Yep, I messed around some more this afternoon after work and you are correct. This is so handy and yet somehow I never understood how to work this in the owner's manual. As an example, I wanted to take a picture of a component in my truck's engine bay. My D5100 didn't think a flash was...

    Still have your first SLR?

My first SLR was my Dad's Kodak Retina Reflex IV and it's still in the closet and complete as seen here. I was actually it's third owner, as one of my older brothers passed in on to me. I have fond memories of this camera and it still worked perfectly when it was stored away 40 years ago.

    Post your macro photos here

A freshly minted and properly gapped spark plug ready to go in my Nissan along with five others when I can find some spare time. This was shot with my Dad's early 1970's Nikkor 55mm Macro f/3.5 AI Converted with M2 Ring and Nikkor 3.0 Diopter Close-Up Attachment. All manual settings of course...

    35mm Film Scanner

Than you. Yes the Epson V600 will be my next stop. Here is and example of the yield I'm receiving from the HP G4050. This is a perfectly exposed, sharp Kodachrome. Scanning at higher dpi serves only to create huge files without any corresponding increase in clarity. In fact, there's just no...

What's Hanging From Your Rear View Mirror?

For those of you who have something hanging from their rear view mirror, what is it? Mine is a strange bug, as purchased from my child at our garage sale. I took a fancy to it, dutifully paid the asking price and have enjoyed its presence for many years since.

    Food shots

T'was the wife's birthday yesterday and in view of her role as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, we anointed her cake with a tent in a forest of candles. I had to shoot this without much regard to settings (other than turning off the flash), as the candles were many and were rapidly burning down! The...

    Nikkor Close-Up Attachment No. 2

I was looking in some boxes at my Mom's house and found a Nikkor relic of my Dad's in an unlikely place. It probably dates from the mid-1970s. It's a Nikkor Close-Up Attachment No. 2 (3.0 Diopter). Happily, it screws onto my 18-55mm kit lens and works just fine without any special attention...

    Marilynne's Wetlands and Other Stuff

Marilynne, I found the perfect boat for you today to purchase and expand the oceanic reach of your photography. It'll require a little fixing up sure, but a little putty and Bondo and she'll be ready for adventure. Actually, I think it's the Gilligan and Skippers' Minnow finally found ...

    HBO's Boardwalk Empire On Film

I don't know much about commercial movie making, but my wife and I are fans of HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire', an intriguing miniseries set in 1920's America during the Prohibition era. The photography is extraordinary and it's matched with wonderful sets. I was surprised to read that the entire...
