Hey Mike, since you allow edits I thought I'd take the liberty of correcting some of the technical shortcomings I spotted with your shot here:

I'm on the wrong side of the pond to know what kind of camera bag that is. Maybe the new Peak Design??

Enjoy the new ride Mike. :encouragement:

I didn't buy this, but a nice used Fuji X-T10 camera wearing a 7Artisans 25mm f1.8 lens showed up at my doorstep yesterday. My sister in Iowa sent it to me. What a great sister I have. :encouragement:

I've been lugging around an old Bogen 3401 (Manfrotto 455) with an Arca Swiss B1 on it for years. I decided it's time to drop a little bit of weight and ordered a Benro TMA38CL Mach3 carbon fiber tripod. It should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.

Bought a kit lens!!

got the NIKON AF-P DX 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6G VR

mostly just to use for video. the AF-P is amazingly fast andquiet even in video.
Bought it used for cheap.

I added the Tamron 85mm f1.8 to the stable today. Its very close to the Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro, but the macro doesn't have vibration compensation. Now there is a macro lens for macro and a portrait lens for portraits.

Bet that will be nice having vibration compensation on it. I have the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, but it doesn't have VR. It yields gorgeous bokeh though!

I was torn between 1.8 with VC or 1.4 without. I think the VC will give me more options than the 1.4 but I've never shot with a 1.4 lens before, so IDK. Played around in low light last night after work and was very pleased with the results.

What focal length lens are you looking at? Keep in mind that before VC, photographers produced many great images so I would personally take a close look at the 1.4.

Obviously the f/1.4 will offer even a shallower depth of field, but when it comes to taking portraits, that means part of the face will be out of focus when shooting wide open (even at f/1.8). The biggest advantage is f/1.4 allows in more light than the f/1.8, but it isn't going to be a huge difference. You should be fine with it! Looking forward to seeing photos! :cheerful:

I think you will be happy with the 85 1.8 lens. It should do a fine job isolating the subject of your portrait shots. The 1.4, like the Sigma 85 1.4 Art lens, is amazing for portraits. But it is also pretty expensive and much heavier. Congrats on the additions to your collection. On that macro lens... are you able to hand hold for those shots. I find I cannot. I am too wobbly. When I try using my Nikon 60 2.8 D I do that using a tripod usually.

In reference to the Tamron 85mm f1.8 I just purchased.
That is true. However, Ansel Adams took beautiful pictures without a Nikon DSLR. I choose the Nikon.:D
I was going to go with the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 to compliment the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 I have, but I wanted something that worked great on both FX & DX, plus I already have a 50mm and 100mm prime. Next I had to decide between 1.4 and 1.8. I know 1.4 allows more light, but so does VC when used properly. I can compensate about 3-4 stops of light using The Tamron 85 1.8 which in theory gives me more to work with than 1.4 without VC. Again, never shooting a 1.4 lens, I don't know. The D800 I shoot with is a big old tattle tale with camera shake so I typically shoot non VC lenses at double focal length. This lens with the VC allows me to shoot less than half focal length on the D800. Also, the Tamron I chose was a good balance between massively huge (sigma 1.4) and light weight (nikkor 1.8). If I were choosing a wide angle prime, I don't think the VC would help as much and would probably look more closely at the 1.4 option.

Yes, as long as I have the shutter speed 2x focal length, its not bad. 1/200 seems to be ok for both FX&DX. I do the whole - elbows-tucked-in, shutter-release-after-exhale technique but I need good light or the ISO gets jacked up. I also try and do all I can to minimize the amount of time I need the camera up to my eye. I try and think about the settings and get them dialed in before I bring the camera up to my eye. Once I bring the camera up, I think about my elbows, take my breath and snap the pic. This helps with my body shake.

I've been wanting to experiment with a Tiffen Black Pro-Mist filter for a long time and finally decided to get one. Shelled out for an 82mm (!), 1/4 filter and a set of step-rings so I can use it on all my lenses.

I imagine it will look something like this; mainly because this is a product photo of a Tiffen 82mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 filter:

Got a full frame Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens for my Nikon Z50. It will probably be my "walking around" lens while I wait for the promised DX 18-140mm.

I am not so experienced with filtering yet but I like the fact that you can buy the clear so to protect my lens. I have had it installed on all my lenses (2) since unboxing.

People like to debate if you need a clear filter, but I learned my lesson when I dented the rim of my most expensive lens after I took my clear filter off. I am a klutz, that is why I keep one on any lens that doesn't have a hood attached. :)
