Still trying to get star trails . . . I guess practice will eventually get me there.
Practice makes perfect! :D
I believe the rotation is about 15 degrees every hour so if you are pointed toward the north star you will need to be open for quite a while to get good trails. A buddy of mine shoots star trails a lot and I believe his leaves his shutter open for at least an hour. I believe this is where he started with information on it. Photography techniques: Star trail photography
Now another method I hear a lot about is multiple exposure trail blending. like a time lapse but for a composite. I have not triled this method so... I believe there is some software that does the actual work for you IDK for sure

Johnathan, thanks for the link. I don't think this method will work with digital. I'm not sure at what point the pixels begin to get fried. I do know that when I did a 10 minute exposure, I thought I had captured an amazing number of stars, but they were just burned out pixels. worthless shot.

It seems the best bet in digital is to use the compositing software (startrails.exe). I had some success with it. But right now I'm trying to find the right combination of f-stop, iso, and exposure to keep from having hot pixels and noise.

Always something new to learn :)

Hi Helene, sorry to but in but what do you mean pixels being fried during long exposure? Pardon my ignorance.
I have tried a 30minute exposure @ F22 ISO100.
Here is the link: Star Trails WM | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Dont want to post pic here and hijack your thread. :)

They just show up white, as if the sensor had overexposed them or just simply whited them out.

Ranie, your link does not go to any star photos, so please feel free to post here . . . I certainly don't consider it hijacking, and I'd love to see a 30 minute exposure. :)

I haven't left home for the last few days and it's been too windy to take photos outside . . . Lucia is my best model . . . I know you all may be tired of seeing pics of her.
