it is big - heavy - awkward. For and old pup hand held shots will be limited, maybe a new tripod head for birds in flight. Images i have taken work for me, there is a learning curve both physical and mental. The price and image quality work for me.

Thanks for posting these, Ron. Sorry for being dense, but can you explain what each of the three pics are at each distance?

1. A full frame of chair and duck.
2. Cropped duck sorry they are not all in order
3. Cropped chair and duck.
I was looking to see what i could expect for size and resolution.

Pic 3772-001 looks like it has the miniature effect.

I'm getting pretty used to the weight of the lens. If it's too heavy or awkward you should consider a gimbal. I purchased a very entry level Opteka and it's served me well thus far. I can tell how a more expensive one would function better but it's not too difficult to manage with this one. When balanced correctly it glides up and down and around very smoothly and holds in place relatively well just from being balanced correctly.

I paid $1313, which included delivery for my Tamron 150-600. Had to wait three months, but it was certainly worth it.
I had the Sigma 150-500 zoom but when I purchased my D7100, it showed up all of the faults of the 4-year-old Sigma.
Whereas the Sigma was really soft at 500mm (Thom Hogan said it was a good 200-400 lens), at 600mm, the Tamron is very sharp, even hand-held. Plus the Vibration Control was so noisy on the Sigma, I had to turn the sound off when viewing some young kangaroo males have a sparring "fight".
The Tamron is so much better than the Sigma. Which is not a surprise, really, because it's new technology.

$1313 is Australian dollars! and not a grey import!
In Australia, we don't pay GST (or VAT) for any overseas purchases under $1000, which powerful retailers are trying to stop.

For some reason I had trouble starting a reply. Hopefully there will not be some dupes. It is nice to see more people getting the len. I lucked out today and got mine and it was $1069 plus $26 for shipping. I tried a few quick shots to be sure it worked. Now I am packed and heading for the lake for 5 days without phone or internet. It is time for the Deer, Moose and Loons. Hopefully Monday I will have a few pictures to post. Raya

I got mine yesterday and I got to take a few shots to try it. My feeling so far is that I'm very happy with it and that comes from someone who is generally dissapointed when I first get something. I also got a Lowepro Lens Case (11 x 26cm ) which fits this lens. It's a very snug fit, but I can get the lens (Hood reversed) and the tripod ring attached in the bag. It is only just barely long enough but that's fine all you need. Here are a few test shots from today. They are nothing special, but they tell me I can handhold it and get acceptable results. The camera was D7100. The focal lengths are between 320mm and 550mm. I think they are mainly F8 at 1/1000 with auto ISO doing it's thing. The blackbird is at ISO 3200 which is a testament to the D7100 as I was pleased with the way this one cleaned up. I've also put bigger versions here.

They are available cheaper....$1249 being the price at a couple of stores but NONE in stock and unlikely to be available till the end of the year (due to waiting lists).
If you know somewhere that has them now, please tell. I can pay more for it now as long as it's not too much more

The Black bird at 550mm is sharper than my sigma at 400mm so its looking like i have to get one,so long as the wife doesn't come up behind me and see me typing thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivb bcv###

Well the wife says i slipped while typing and banged my head on my sigma 120-400,sounds plausible:D

Did the D7100 show any signs of focus difficulty with it
