Good blackbird chase that rotten raven away!
nik_6215.jpg

Blackbirds and I agree crows should be chased away as well!

Anyone with advice on getting black coloured birds to not look like silhouettes? Grey mornings definately don't help I know
When you find out how, please let me know. I have the same problem. :)

Horses love the blackbirds they catch the bugs that bother them and give a good back scratch at the same time :) When the horses walk they scare up the bugs so quite often the blackbirds are down around where the horses are eating

Ok so I'm not the only one with raven and crow silhouettes :)

While coming to the end of my chores this morning I made an exciting discovery
Killdeer and later I realized baby killdeer too!
Wow are they camouflaged well!
nik_7111.jpg

Doing the injured bird routine and making sure I pay attention which made me look harder

Ah ha baby killdeer!
nik_6947.jpg

Hey crazy camera lady can you see me?
nik_7153.jpg

Later this afternoon 5yr old and I went exploring out back since we could hear them. It took ALOT of patience but it paid off

I wish I had brought a smaller lens or could get back far enough without grass getting in the way

Parents not happy with me finding little ones so we backed off and let them be

Great find on the baby Killdeer. I think the nest we were watching flooded with all the rain we've been having. Haven't seen the parents any more.

I captured one accidentally a couple months ago down at the river when I was watching the mallards on the ice and someone on here helped me identify it. Hubby and I had never seen or heard of a killdeer before.
I figured hubby would never believe how camoflauged they are so brought lens out to 70mm and took a shot of a parent killdeer
nik_7110.jpg

my first photo I posted in previous post is another shot at 270mm Unless they're moving they're impossible to see
I lowered my Aperture to 7.1 for the first photo because the blurring helped make the bird stand out

Onto much cuter fuzzy creatures Lucy hatched out her first ever goslings on Sunday morning :)
This was about 6hrs or so after hatching
nik_6859.jpg

All 3 tucked in for their first night.
Hubby wasn't crazy enough to reach in hold her wing up so set camera to P and turned on flash for him so I could do it

It's been a while since i saw one of those! When living further up north in Quebec, i used to see this nests all the time in trees.

We thought we'd escaped it up in our area AC016 but in town is disgusting fences, patios, swingsets everything completely black they're so covered in the things. Usually caterpillars don't bother me but they are so distructive and there's SO many of them yuck

Periodically, we get infestations of those evil caterpillars. During one invasion of the Catskill Mountains preserve, the State was going to spray them, until someone from the Dept of Environmental Conservation noticed that a species of bird that normally is not indigenous to the State moved in but just loves gypsy moth caterpillars. They were migrating north as the caterpillars moved north. Once they decimated the caterpillar population, the birds moved on.

Nature can be a wonderful thing.

Lots of birds around but nothing seems to touch the caterpillars. Everywhere you drive in town the trees are completely stripped bare and they're moving up here now Blech! Stopped at the tack store today and nearly slipped because I didn't look before stepping and the ground was black but greasy yucky when I stepped out of vehicle GROSS!

I've been taking many pics lately of birds etc (my kids been hiding when they see the camera) so I have absolutely no idea when I might have messed around with my camera too much but when I viewed this it was sooooo sharp and over saturated that it looked strange on my viewfinder. I did some searching and found that my colour was on vivid and sharpness was set to +9! Set my colour to portrait now
Anyways, I lowered saturation and used noise reduction to help smooth the sharpness. Is it still too sharp? I know not the best composition but this is the only one where my daughter is turned away so hoping to get some help to see if I can save the ones with the lovely smiles

ok so had excellent big bird opportunities today when kids and I took a drive out of town today to see if bald eagles and osprey were nesting. I'd brought my CPOL because it was finally beautiful bright blue skies but ugh cloud moved in and although bright it didn't make for good lighting. Hope to get some help which setting choices so next trip I can nail it :)

These last ones are actually a bald eagle nest but it seems osprey have taken it over and in first pic they'd just landed as we arrived and then were fighting which we found out was a fish when one flew to the power pole to eat alone
