Nice pictures from your road trip Sandpatch. Did you take the Cornflower on the trip?

A great question. We'd planned on it, but my wife has yet to retire (despite my pleas!) and the driving would have consumed too many days. Would have been nice to have it, as we had to rent a car when there. Next time for sure.

Speaking of graffiti, I also caught this nice fresh-out-of-the-box CP covered hopper rolling west. :)

Not sure if I posted this one before. From 10/06/2019, Carolina Piedmont 2007 (former SOU GP-38 2740) rests with stablemates at Laurens, SC. The CPDR operates about 35 miles of line from Laurens to Greenville, SC formerly owned by the ACL.

Passed through Columbia, SC today and detoured through town to see what was moving on the railroad. Typical summer temperatures in the 90s with high humidity kept my visit short, but caught CSX F768 at Tryon Street. CSX and NS share a short piece of joint trackage here as the lines converge to Devine Jct..

Nice catch Sandpatch. Running the locomotives elephant style. Was the whole train covered hoppers?

It was mixed freight with a bit of everything. In the wake of PSR, I'm confused on CSX train routings and don't even know where the train was ultimately headed. I missed a better shot of him further down the line. The summer heat made me impatient and I went to find him. Just as I found the train, he got the board and I couldn't get back to my better spot.

Caught the same train a bit further along its route, but a cloud appeared and wiped out my lighting. CSX crosses the NS's yard leads just ahead and in a nod to 19th Century railroading, CSX must come to a stop before crossing NS. I presume they look both ways before proceeding. :D

Pretty sure this guy realized he wasn't in the best spot or the first shot & stopped here to give you a better chance.:p I have always thought of clouds as God's own diffuser. Both shots are winners in my book.

Taken by Mrs. Sandpatch with her cell phone at Seneca, SC is a train on an NS branchline. We were taking an evening walk and couldn't believe our good fortune. This was a nighttime train and was only recently changed to run in daylight. The 7127 is a 30 year old GP-60, as is the second unit.

Curious what elephant style means. Would you explain it, please?

...I'm confused on CSX train routings....

Locally there is a heavily traveled railroad crossing used by commuters. When a CSX freight train rolls through, it takes forever. :beguiled: Plus somewhere around here is a...do I want to call it a yard(?)...where they spend hours moving trains or engines around. Residents who live near it complain bitterly about all the noise while they are trying to sleep. It seems the township's noise ordinance doesn't apply in this type of situation.

Elephant style means locomotives connected nose to tail. Like the elephants did when they paraded to the circus.

Ah railroads & neighbors who dislike them. Yes trains can & do block crossings for a long time now. The trains have gotten to crazy lengths. I think CSX is one of the worst offenders. A train now can be more than twice as long as one just a few years ago. If they are going into a yard it can take seemingly forever to get the whole thing in there. That is a real problem.

As far as noise goes, the way I see it is the rail yard was there long before the houses were. A rail yard is not a quiet place & there is no way to make it quiet short of shutting it down.
