hello, this is d90dewey, jumping in as this is exactly the question a had! I began shooting a girls varsity soccer team coached by my brother, and found the real problem in late summer with the setting sun creating extremely long shadows, and once the lights come on the blackness of the areas surrounding an open field. experimented a great deal to find neutral ground with my d90 in regards to shutter speed and ISO setting to accommodate the 70-300mm late game. I had decided that the 300s would work for action shots in particular and my d90 could become my "bag cam". I've only been shooting DSLR for about 16-18 months, but am totally addicted! action stuff is a variation for me, and one I think I'll enjoy, in addition to my current macro love, which I shoot with my 105mm.

Scott Kelby discussed in great detail the camera settings, and purpose of each, in today's blog post about shooting an NFL game. Even though I don't shoot sports like this, I still found the article useful.
