From July 1984, a northbound commuter train clears the junction at Rondout, IL. The train is on the Milwaukee Road mainline and the other track is the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern's. This was, and remains a fast railroad. The yellow sign attached to the signal at the right grants freight trains 50 mph and passenger trains 70. Long ago in the days of steam, a sign several miles north advised engineers to "Reduce Speed To 90".

A few more Kodachromes from the wayback machine in 1984. The first from Schneider, IN and the second from Terre Haute, IN. Sadly, the Terre Haute depot was razed soon after I took the picture.

Took a step back from the wayback machine yesterday and snagged a shot of NS Train 192 near Killian, SC. It was overcast, but the low light was actually welcome because I would have otherwise been shooting into the sun at this location.

Those darn utility line markers drive me crazy. There was just no way to work around this one.

Returning to July 1981, we're at Hudson, OH with what looks like an empty iron ore train returning from Pittsburgh to the docks at Cleveland for another load. This line is former Pennsylvania Railroad.

I miss seeing cabooses and the human side of railroading, such as seen at the Hudson depot during a crew change.

Oh, that's sad. I wonder if the ore traffic is gone too with the many mill closures that took place soon after my photos were taken. Upon reading your post, I did a little research to find that the branch to the right of the depot is gone from Hudson to [FONT=Verdana,Arial,Tahoma,Calibri,Geneva,sans-serif]Cuyahoga Falls. It used to run all the way to Akron.[/FONT]

The ore docks & Hulett unloaders are no longer there on Whiskey Island. Most if not all laker's are now self unloaders. Not sure if they unload at Whiskey Island anymore.

The trains used to go from Whiskey Island down through Hudson to Mingo Jct. I'm not sure if those steel mills in Steubenville Ohio are still in operation. The last time through there everything looked abandoned & neglected to me.

It seems that ore is still being unloaded at Conneaut & shipped south by the Bessemer-CN.

I also looked at Google maps & see that other trackage abandoned & gone.

From September 1990, an SOU GP-30 returns from Montgomery to Autauga Creek, AL. I somehow recall that I had to be in to work early this day, but thought to carry the Nikon along. Thankfully there was just enough morning light.

Norfolk Southern's 13th Street Tower in Birmingham, AL was still hooping up orders in the time-honored tradition in November 1985. The former SOU and L&N mainlines crossed here. The tower has since been razed.

Cheney Railroad's diminutive 44-Tonner sets out a boxcar for interchange near Pinson, AL in April 1990. Sadly, the rails have since been removed and the line is gone.

Just a handful of Kodachromes from the early '80s at Tuscaloosa, AL. All were shot with a Nikon EL-2 body.

The first two are on the SOU mainline, with Amtrak's Crescent at the long-abandoned tower where the GM&O crossed. SOU then provided a fine looking freight.

Tuscaloosa also hosted an ICG yard which was frozen in time and often without people. It made for some good, unhurried picture taking.

My wife and I chased it one day and rode it the next. When reading an old Trains Magazine from the '50s, I discovered a photo of a trestle at Goodwater, AL on the train's route, so my wife an I set out to find it in an age before GPS. After a lot of hiking in the woods, we found the remote site, but substantial tree growth precluded us replicating the magazine shot. We chose this spot as the best available, allowing a safe place to stand and good light. Needless to say, there was nobody else there.
