Why did you choose Nikon?

I still have my first two Pentax SLR's. They both receive fond looks on a display shelf. I didn't even have a Spotmatic or a MX, both mine are the old screw mount. My favorite glass was a 85mm.

My first SLR was a Pentax ME that I bought with college graduation money (1978). My mom was aghast that I'd buy an SLR because she thought they could only shoot slides as Dad always did with his Yashica rangefinder. When I showed her my first roll of developed film as pictures she could hold and look at, she was amazed! I bought a Pentax ME Super for my wife, but she never used it and my son has it now. I bought a Nikon N80 back in 2002 and when it came time to go digital, the D80 was the way to go for me as it was pretty similar to its film sibling. My son got my N80 for Christmas a few years ago and now I sold him my D80 when I upgraded to the D7000. Great cameras all! Although I pondered Canon, I could not justify buying one as I'd have to replace lenses and get a whole 'nuther flash unit.

My buddy just bought a Canon 7D with a 100-400 zoom lens the size of Vermont and he's having a whale of a time trying to figure out how to use it.

Having been a former Canon user, their menu system is very confusing. Nikon seems to be so user friendly.

I started with fujifilm cameras about 16 years ago and continued to buy their products. I remember buying a 6mp fuji digital p&s camera that did not have any sort of image stabilization. That's when I came to appreciate my very first DSLR. The Canon Rebel XS.

Amazing how many users started with Pentax!! I had an ME Super too what a great little camera!! Got a Canon (sorry folks) p&s and it's better I think than the Nikon p&s. However Nikon SLR always a dream and I have D200

Pentax was one of the happening companies in the 70's! Nikon was the big banana, all the pro's used it. The rest battled for position and Pentax was one of the top in the heap. Canon, Minolta and Fuji were all in the fray, leap frogging each other with new announcements.

In the day, Pentax was solid, affordable, had a great array of lenses and their quality was excellent. I was never disappointed with anything I bought from Pentax. It was well advertised and well like by sales people in camera stores so I am not surprised many people started with a Pentax. Happy customers encourage their friends to buy the same brand and I know I converted many to Pentax over the years.

Canon made a huge jump with the AE-1 and really shot forward with this model and massive advertising push. Eventually, they lead the way with Digital and knocked Nikon on it's butt while they were napping at the switch. I never liked the feel or the look of Canon and they were never my favourite then, nor are they today.

My wife bought me my first DSLR, the D80. She spent a lot of time researching Canon and Nikon and settled on the D80 for me. No complaints from me, and I've migrated to the D5100 now. I love 'em!
