Just when I thought I wasn't going to see anything new in the yard....
I almost removed the sock feeder because nothing was landing on it, not even the House Finches.
Totally backlit, and my camera was on auto ISO. Well, it is good enough for ID purposes. I was lucky to get off 3 lousy shots before it flew off.

New to me. I have never seen one of these before.

#15 Cayuga Duck (New to me.)
Lake Arlington

As far as I know, these are a domesticated duck. Were there several of these, or just one? Maybe an escapee, or maybe one that someone released when they didn't want him anymore. Regardless, nice shot. :)

Thanks, Woody.
I think there are several out at the lake. Maybe somebody let them go or didn't have them in an enclosure, and they took off. I had some Mallards when I was a kid. One day, they took off flying across the neighborhood.

I dunno. I will look closer next time I am out there and see how many there are.

My understanding is that domesticated ducks are not very good at flying. They are bred to have big breasts since they are used as a food source. We had a few on a local lake and there was a crew of volunteers who sort of looked after them and made sure they got enough to eat. Eventually they were collected and taken by individuals who kept them in their own, private ponds.

Anyway, sorry to side track. They are really nice looking birds! :)

No worries. I didn't know about the flying aspect and domestication. I did read they were good for eating. Makes me want to look into it some more. They get lots of junk food at the lake from people feeding them everything but what they should be eating.
The lake has a huge neighborhood next to it and an office that sells fishing licenses. Maybe they take care of them???

When he was on the blinds in my kitchen. Also posted in the other thread about the wren in my closet.
