What does a dollar get you today?

Well at our local second hand clothing store - when hunting for a Cat in the Hat stuffie (what grand-parents won't do eh?) I happened upon a Vivitar 2800-D Auto Thyristor. It looked in very good shape, not banged up or scratched. Asked the clerk how much? She said - "oh give me a dollar for it, we don't know if it works or anything about it" So a dollar it was.

Took it home, dropped in 4 AA batteries and pressed the fire button - flash fired.
Found the manual on line - this is vintage - as in 1980's vintage. the "-D'" was for minolta and olympus 35mm cameras. But when I mounted it onto my D610 it fired. of course it is not digital. Not sure what they mean by "auto". It has three settings. A1 A2 and M. My interpretation is Bright - Brighter and Brightest.

I'm thinking I'll pick up a cheap optical trigger ($6 ish down by d'Bay) and use it for background and kicker lighting. To adjust the lighting one could use flash filters or soft box covers and bounce it. Head does tilt.

Anyone use a vintage flash like this?

I believe MikeD90 was using a selection of old vivitar flashes! I think that was who I sent mine to! :)

My new laptop arrives today. I got the 16gig of ram here waiting. So I figured what the heck. Lets turn this laptop into a speed demon. Just ordered a 500gig Samsung EVO850 solid state drive.

Stopped by a camera show Sunday, one which has mostly film stuff. Found five 4x5 film holders for the Shen Hao.

.

No, not $10 for the lot, $10 each. But snagged all five for a pair of $20's.

Well ime here again, after starting to use the Sigma 150-600C on the D7200 most of my pictures have been crap, tried every combination of hand held, tripod,OS on and off, filter on and off, just could not get consistent results,no sign of a date for the 200-500 and dont want to keep using the Sigma so its gone and for now ime back in the Tamron 150-600 camp, guess i will start enjoying the focus freeze now,at least until the 200-500 is readily available.

After responding to a forum question about ND filters, I decided to get this 82mm 10-stop ND filter by ICE. Has some decent reviews on Amazon, too. My Sigma 24-70mm lens takes 82mm front filters. And for a price of $29.97, it won't break the bank. ;) For those who own the new Tamron 24-70mm or the new Nikon 24-70mm, both of these lenses take 82mm front filters, too.

makes you look like a professional though lol, i always wanted to try one, finally did on the mate's D610, felt ok, but carrying it all day with the 500mm on might prove a little tough. i guess you might get used with it??

I bought a knock off for my D5100 when i had it as i didnt like the feel of the camera on its own, that had both batteries in the grip though.

The idea of one battery in the grip and one in the camera has me baffled, just sounds stupid.

Don't the D5X00 grips have two in the grip with a peg that goes in the battery slot. It makes much more sense to me that way. With the MB-D15 grip, you have to take it off to access the on board battery.
