Either get a 35 mm or a 50 mm f1.8 as your next lens, both are great.

As far as Nikon vs Canon they both make great cameras. I prefer the feel of the Nikon and I do love Nikon glass. My biggest gripe with Canon is they have changed their lens mount I think 3 times over the last decade or so and that makes glass obsolete. Great for selling new lenses but bad if you had a bunch invested and want to upgrade the body, that would really make me angry. I love that I can use older (sometimes better glass) on my newer bodies.

Biggest reason is I couldn't belong to Nikonites and be a Canon shooter.

To me, the Nikons felt more solid/better built and the controls better laid out.
Also, Nikon's APS-C sensor is a tad bigger than Canon's:cool:

The 35mm f1.8 is great for portraits and it's cheap too.

When I got my D3100 a few months ago, the girl behind the counter at the camera shop told me there is not too much difference - if you don't have lenses at home from one or the other - I tried both out and decided on the Nikon.

For 2nd lens, while by no means an expert (or anything even close) I got the 33mmf/1.8 - great lens!

Actually, I think you got the 35mm f/1.8. :) I'm pretty sure Nikon doesn't make a 33mm lens. ;)

Why did I choose Nikon? My wife is Japanese and worked for Canon about 10 yrs ago in Japan. She told before I bought an SLR in Japan Canon is known for having better Cameras but Nikon is known for having better lenses. She also told me that Canon is for the Posh and Savy people and Nikon is for the lovers of photograpghy atleast in Japan. She recommened to go with Nikon. Since leaving Canon my wife has bought only Nikon but not SLRs. So I have to say my Wife had a great deal of influence on me!!!!!!!!

when I switched from film to digital I bought a Canon. It was a great learning tool but, the pop up flash stopped working the same day I bought a 430ex lol. I actually made the mistake of going to the same camera store and "looking" at other cameras. I picked up the D90 for the first time and the guy hands me the instruction manual and says "We just got this in today. It is a new camera and the reviews all look promising." my reply was "just bought a 430ex for the canon 3 weeks ago..."
I sat there and played with that camera for 3 hours, they let me return my 430ex and I bought the D90 and a SB800. Never looked back!
Ironically I let a friend borrow the canon for the last 2 years while she learned a little about photography. It was stolen out of her car the week of Christmas along with the old lenses I had for it.

It's funny how she said it was for the Posh & Savy bc a lot of my friends have a Nikon & they're optimistic & take pictures all the time + have fun doing it etc.
But my one friend that I know who owns a Canon, acts very snooty when we talk to her about Photography or anything related to it. She spends more time talking ABOUT how she is a "real" photographer than she takes actual pictures, which we all find very silly, LOL.

Cool story, that's sad how it got stolen though. I heard somewhere that you can keep your camera in a non name brand bag or something & it's less likely to get stolen, IDK if it's true or not. But it's one of the things I'm scared of happening to me when I get a DSLR =\

I used to shoot Canon film cameras, fact is I still have them. (A1 & Ftb and some lenses including a 300mm f4). I switched to Nikon because the D50 was less expensive than the entry level Canon. Most of the features were fairly close to identical. From that moment on it has been Nikon all the way. Have not regretted the move.

Like Kayte, I use Nikon because that's what my mom used, and like Marcel, because Nikon didn't change their lens mount. The last film camera I had was/is the Nikon F5. when I got my D2X, the bodies were almost identical. Dials, buttons, etc. all worked the same . . . I didn't have to relearn.

It's amazing how many people go with Nikon because it's "hereditary"!
I myself chose a Nikon because my dad always had one, only picked up a Canon to see what all the fuss was about, put it back down and bought my first Nikon DSLR :D

My first camera was the Olympus OM-1! :) So I wasn't bothered by this Canon vs Nikon...

I don't take this rivalry very seriously, because cameras are just tools. But I find that some photographers are too obsessed about equipment.

Oh this was a real tear jerker actually. They were headed down to the Sacramento Airport in Cali to pick up their daughter who is in the army and was lucky to have leave over Christmas. They were also planning to visit some family in the Sac area so they could stay there and not have to drive back to early so they had all the christmas presents and stuff with them. They were also driving her mothers 2010 Tahoe. The theives popped the lock on the Tahoe with a screw driver and stole everything! presents, camera, everything... luckily they got everything covered by the insurance and they paid me for the camera and lenses. To my dying day I will never forget the sadness in her voice when she called me that night.

Using no name bags/cases is great to some degree but the tech that goes into them is limited and usualy not very practical for every day use. I have 3 and each one has a purpose and place. Light weight pack for every day, Multi day outdoor shoots, and a no name pack that I refuse to wear any more. I also have a rolling hard case that gets used only for studio shoots.
