D7100 Buffer Issue

Hello, as I am new to this, this is my first post.

I own the D7100 and usually when you have the camera set to any format of JPG the camera buffer should be whatever you set it to in the menus (usually 100 capacity), however, on my 7100 it suddenly only has a buffer of about 5-6 frames when set to Medium or Large JPG,and then slows down. But when the camera is set to JPG small size the buffer is the max I set it to (100). Any thoughts on this?

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.

you don't say what card you have, so we are not sure of the read/write speed.

You could try and format the card (in the camera's menu) and see if that fixes the problem, or try another SD card.

I have tried Sandisk 32gb class 10, and a Samsung 32gb class 10. both cards do the exact same thing in the camera. I will try to format them and see if that fixes the problem.

Also, it has never done this before, so I am not sure if I accidentally changed a setting that would cause this. However, I did a full reset on user settings to see if it would fix the problem but it didn't.

the SD cards are also speed rated. They will have it on card so look for something like 40 mb/s. I use 90mb/s cards in my D7100 but I rarely shoot over 3 or 4 frames in a row.

The only thing I can think of is that you have it set to jpeg + RAW. There's no way you are filling the buffer with 5-6 jpegs. 5-6 would be about right for RAW files, though.

carguy- Although I may be wrong I don't think it is a memory card problem. Unless memory cards go bad after while but the same thing happens with both cards. And its never done this before.

I do Marathon photography so the high buffer on jpg really helps out sometimes. I only shoot in raw part of the time because my need for post editing is fairly low.

Woodyg3- I am positive I don't have it set to jpg + raw.

I am going to post a video to youtube and post a link here so you guys can see the problem.

Thank you for the input so far

I know the odds of both cards somehow getting corrupted would high, but maybe. I would try formating a card in your computer followed by an in-camera format. Do a full format on the computer, not a 'quick' format.

Two more thoughts... have you tried only putting a card in slot 2? On chance that you get your speed back in slot 2, that would certainly not look good for the camera.

I'm trying to think of a setting that would cause some in-camera post processing on the image. Auto-distortion control? Noise reduction? Active-d? Its like your camera knows it will be slow. Yours starts out saying r05. My buffer says 08 when I half press the shutter. I switched on auto distortion and it then shows 04 when I first press the shutter.

I somehow put myself in the same problem. The auto distortion is on. But it is greyed out so I can't change the setting! HELP!

If you switch to manual shooting, can't you change it then? Not every shooting mode allows you to change all settings.

You have to have a cpu lens attached or it grays out. Try a different lens to get access to it, although its probably not active if its grayed. The lens you have may be a cpu lens, but might not be on the list. You can also check to see if you have the latest lens data, I think its L2.009. It installs like a firmware update.
