Flickr now is auto tagging my stuff.

Looks like Flickr has been auto tagging for years, but it is just now that some can actually see the tags and have some control over them.
This has pushed me over the edge: I just gave up on Flickr. I've never really *liked* it but I've used it anyway for some time... Now I'm done.

Time to find another site to host my photos.

Again, it's obvious that this is a limited roll-out, hence the ALPHA in yellow next to the Flickr applied tags. That it offers suggestions is one thing, but in that it applies suggested tags to others' images without their approval for others to see, trial or otherwise, is BS. Yahoo is using a huge community to test software that can be rolled out and utilized in lots of profitable ways in exchange for free photosharing (that they exploit in other ways).

I need to get off my ass and get my own site finished so I can blow that joint.

I guess I am missing the harm in this.
More tags, more chances my images are viewed.

What am I missing?

My take is if you don't tag your photos, it's sort of a non-issue.

But, if you are the artist and you have taken the time to choose how you want to tag your shot, that also means that you've taken the time to not tag your photos in a certain way. For instance, I'll tell you what the photo is of but I'm not necessarily going to give you style tags - on purpose. So, if Flickr is throwing "Abstract" on my photo because I chose to either do something abstract, or worse yet because it can understand what it is, that's a problem for me. Heck, even if the nail the style, I may not want "Portrait" on something that's obviously a portrait because I do not want a potential customer looking at it and thinking I do portrait photography. Their evaluation of my work can point someone searching for a particular tag to a very bad example of that style within my portfolio - even though it's anything but "bad" for every tag I've assigned - and my reputation suffers because they are trying to "help" me.

If they want to offer the service, make it opt-in for those who want to use it. Otherwise I'm happy to opt out of the service. With extreme prejudice. ;)

my flickr account was updated today - nothing i did - tag box showed beta - tags for picture, photo border, vehicle, aircraft and outdoors. Something new an old dog has to learn.

Now it is adding auto tags to my pictures and the menus look a bit different. Probably this upgrade came to me, eventually.

I have Beta listed next to Camera Roll although one church photo was skipped in their tagging even though other photos of the same scene were tagged. A couple of other unrelated photos were skipped as well.

Same as everyone else - Beta tags added, new Photostream options. Not in any way happy. Here's an example of the madness:

Of the tags added, some are out and out wrong, some are redundant, and some I just don't want. Please show me how the hell to turn this off!!

Be glad (for now) that this is BETA. Hopefully it means that they will see the error in their ways and change it back. I don't blame you for being pissed off though.

Thanks for the link. Looks like there is no "opt out" choice at this point. I also went back and found a lot of incorrect tagging. Lilly the Rottweiler is pretty pissed. She is not a "cat" !!

There is always an "opt out". It's called using a different service. ;) Guess Yahoo is catching up with Google on abusing the users of their services.

The nice thing is that you can delete them. The bitch is that they've tagged everything going back in time. The one saving grace is that I decided not to put my Flickr link on my business card in case I dump them.

I mean how many photos are you going to get when you click on an "outdoor" tag?! It's worthless!!

Funny thing is, if you go into your Tags under the '...' menu it doesn't show you their tags. And there's no option anywhere in any setting I can find that allows you to remove their tags.

Umm...I just hovered over their tags and an 'x' showed up within each boxed tag. Then I clicked the x and viola, tag was deleted. Only did it to a couple of my photos so far.

Here is more info from Flickr on it.

Looking at it again, it appears deleting each individual tag is the only way to currently remove them. A pain in the arse for sure especially when you're Jake with a gazillion photos. ;) Didn't see any way to turn off the feature though. :(

@BackdoorHippie.....this sounds promising from Flickr: "What’s next for tags?
We will continue working to constantly improve this feature. Flickr’s tags may evolve as the image recognition technology becomes more accurate and as the algorithm learns to recognize additional concepts. We also want to bring more control to you, so we plan to add tools soon to allow you to batch edit these new tags."
