Well now I have seen it all

Well now I can say I have seen EVERYTHING. I go to leave from my apartment to go to the hospital and what do I see? A DOZEN AND A HALF WILD TURKEYS wandering our grounds. The first thought that comes to my mind is "CRAP! I am 1000 miles away from my shotgun!!!!!". The next thought is, "I wonder if I could get away shooting a tom with my 9mm and get it in the Jeep before the cops showed up?" Some of those toms were easily 20 pounds dressed, the hens maybe 10-12 pounds dressed. CRAP, CRAP, CRAP!!!!!

In the UK i think the law used to be if you hit and killed a pheasant the next driver could pick it up,if you picked it up it was poaching, that could be old wives tales though i never knew.

I've heard that too. :) not that I would stop to pick up something that might have been lying on the road for a day

Have you ever eaten wild turkey? They beat the crap out of store bought ones, especially, as Don pointed out, if you smoke them. They are much leaner and higher in protein than a butterball. Last year was the first time in over 15 years that I did not eat a turkey on Thanksgiving that I had not shot myself. And the only reason for that was that AZ was a lottery state for turkey and I missed the deadline.

Go for a sow if you can 175 pounds or less, preferably under 150 pounds. That is the best tasting meat.
There still are not a lot in this area to hunt. I have to find an area I can get into without killing myself and still be able to shoot one. I think my 5.56 should be able to bring one down.

Don I would not trust .223 to bring down a hog unless you plan in hitting them in the CPU each time. I always hunt hog with either 12 ga 1 oz rifled slugs or my .30-06. They are very tough little buggers and don't EVER count on them being dead if they are lying on their sides...........EVER!!!

The ones I shot years ago were with a .243, pretty hot load and I think 95 grain or something like. I believe they hornady's. Geese hard believe it's been 5 years since I have been out. The ones I shot were right a hundred and were one done with one shot. But even that would be the minimal I would use unless they were less weight. Those things are tough and mean as well as fast.

In TX we are overrun and you used to be able to do it for free, then the ranchers turned it into a business and started trapping. The trapping market went belly up and they charge like 300.00 to hunt them, pretty stupid but I guess they have to pay the bills too.

Anyway, the only time I shoot anything anymore is with the camera. Guess someone thought 40 years was long enough for me and wanted me to go another direction.

I know guys use .223 others success, so it really comes down to comfort and shot placement.

Sorry if this post was too descriptive or offends anyone, it was a big part of my life and would never be ashamed of it.

Not a fan of turkey. Duck is my bird of choice.

Nothing like a good roasted wild duck. However, unlike turkeys which you usually shoot in the head and don't need to worry about chomping down on pellets, you always chew wild duck with some caution, lest you break a tooth on a pellet, especially since you have to use steel shot nowadays!
