20mm f1.8G

It gets great reviews, but it's a focal length you really need to want and I wouldn't. It should have been 18mm. Most serious shooters already have a 24-70, 20mm is too close to that to be exciting. I'm convinced Nikon will never produce a great 16 or 18mm out of fear it will decrease UW zoom sales, because it would.

Yes you raise a good point there. Considering too that the price isn't much different to the 18-35g and not a great deal less than the 16-35, plus the fact that the older 20mm is another alternative, I just wonder how these newer 20g lenses are selling. I see plenty of reviews, but not much talk from those who've purchased one!

I have this lens for a month now.
I was looking around for a lens sorter than the 24mm.
The 14-24 is good, but the price is to high for me.
The older lenses from Sigma and Tokine are no good on the D800 (my opinion)
Every time a look to landscape pictures a read that they made by a 20mm..most of all the older version.
So i keep looking further to the AF-S version. I tried it on a Nikonday in Holland and was surprised ;) So a buy one.
I find it a beautiful lens from the f/2.0 en very sharp. I love this lens for landscape

You are forgetting a few things:
1. Many of Nikon's lenses are due for a resolution upgrade to better serve Nikon's new and coming high resolution image sensors.
2. If you are shooting high IQ nature and landscape images, for example, you wouldn't be using the 24-70, or any zoom for that matter.
3. For this purpose one very useful lens is a 35mm prime, making the 20mm prime a very suitable lens when you want to go wider.

It hasn't been tested on DxO yet and while I'd fancy the focal length/aperture for night shots, it needs to be very sharp to be worth the price difference with some other primes.

The only data so far is Nikon's own MTF chart:
Nikon | Imaging Products | AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED

The new 1.8 shows better MTF performance than the older 2.8.
I plan to buy one, but I am waiting for test results from DxO (and Lenscore).

I'll also wait until the DxO data. If it isn't exceptional, I'll go for the Samyang 24mm 1.4. I bit longer but it should be sharp as a knife. I have the 14mm and that lens impressed me. I think both together cost less than the Nikon 20mm.

I use the Samyang 14mm as well, manual with focus confirm. On a 24mm, with shallower focus, I would hesitate to buy a manual lens, even with FC.

I will use it mainly for night photography. AF is of no use there. The 24mm is about perfect for this. If the 20mm turns out to be better, I might go for the wider option. But it needs to be at least as sharp.

I am beginning to suspect that Nikon is having problems delivering this lens. Retailers who earlier wait listed it have removed the listings.

Here is a recent review of the lens.
Thank You. There are several promising reviews on the web.
I am waiting for DxO (and LenScore) test results. I am also waiting for my retailer to get one in.
P.S. Most images look good compressed to 569 KB. I wish they also showed a 100 or 200% crop of the original.

It can take a while before DxO has tested it. How long is the D750 reviewed there? Still not lens data available today.

I agree.
DxO is clearly developing a problem focusing on selling lens-correction software instead of doing what people have come to expect from them.
LenScore is trying to fill the gap but are doing a poor job of making their data meaningful.
Nikon's own MTF chart is the best we have for now, but unfortunately it's limited to 10 and 30 LP/mm whereas for a 36 MP camera you need data up to 104 LP/mm.

My personal choice for modern primes under 100mm today would comprise of: 20mm f/1.8G, 35mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.8G for budget and 24mm f/1.4G, 35mm f/1.4G, 50mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.4G for high-end, which would probably cover 99% of my photography needs. If I considered third party options, I would swap the 35mm f/1.4G and 50mm f/1.8G with Sigma Art f/1.4 series lenses.
This is pretty much where I'm heading... The 20mm is a ways off for me at this point, but I have been thinking about about a wide-angle for my D750 and I'm really getting further and further away from using zooms, preferring instead to use primes. The D750 has only amplified this and the Sigma "Art" primes (35mm, 50mm) are *seriously* rocking my world.

I agree that the Samyang 14mm is a great lens. It's optically about the sharpest <25mm prime available for my cam and costs next to nothing. It has some distortion but I discovered a lens profile online that does a pretty decent job correcting that.
