Platypedia putnami - It's an annual cicada. 1 inch body length. These click rather than buzz as we have a cicada killing wasp that hunts them. From my research, I seem to have found them in a new location in the state of Utah.

I thought this was a bee, but its more likely a big fly of some sort. I found pictures of the same fellow on the web, unidentified and on native CA plants, which this one is (encelia californica).

Its driving me spare,i know a doctor who episode must have taken inspiration from these,but there was a film where mechanical versions where searching for some one with thermal imaging.the only thing i can remember is he hid in a bath,i think it was full of ice,help
