Does the flash pop up when you press #13 shown here?

NO! I have tried is in several setting too.

The way it should work is press the button once to raise the flash. After the flash is raised, you can press and hold the button and use the command dial to select the flash mode.

Camera does need to be powered on and mode dial set to P, S, A or M. If pressing the button does not raise the flash with camera on and one of these modes, the button or the latch it opens may be stuck or failed. I suppose something sticky on the flash could also have it "glued" down.

Congratulations.

All the automation tends to overwhelm us (and makes us stupid at times). The first thing one should have thought of, was to check if the flash worked in manual mode, but when you are on all auto mode simple things escape us. The first thing I do every morning is to check the settings on the camera. Once I left it in jpeg at ISO 3200 (I forget why I did this), and after shooting 100 images, wondered how come there was no RAW and why the images were so grainy.

Thanks aroy, this makes me feel a little less of a goober. I tend to go into hyper mod when things don't go right. I really. really appreciate all the help that I received. I knew the flash wasn't opening, but newer realized that it would effect all the settings like it did. I was using my SB600 for a long time until it broke last month, and waiting to have time to make the repairs.

That would have been extremely helpful to mention that earlier on.... like around post #10 when I suggested you try a shot on auto with onboard flash.:dejection:

nickt, I apologize for not stating the fact that the flash was not opening earlier. I thought that I mentioned it, but in my hast to describe the issues it was inadvertently left off. I feel badly enough that I made this mistake. I did mention this on post #26. Can everyone just accept my apology, and chalk it up to mistakes novices make?
