Not bad at all. As expected, the vignetting is heavy at 18mm, acceptable at 35mm. But in terms of sharpness (even the edges vs center) the lens performs very well. Judging upon that photo of a jockey (92mm f6.3), even it's bokeh is pleasing enough to allow the use of it for portraiture...

Thanks for those test shots, Joe. The new lens appears to perform pretty well.

I'm very happy with it. I'm not a pixel peeper. The above test shots were taken on a tripod, mirror up, wireless remote. The lens is sharper then my handheld skills at the moment. Carrying one lens around will allow me more time to get a photo then mess around swapping lenses. There are times that I see a photo id like to take but the lens on the camera is too long or short and I don't bother. To me, a great photo out weighs slightly better IQ. The 18-300mm 5.6 I had was great too, but this one is much smaller and noticeably lighter, smaller and less expensive filters too. It's the perfect lens for me. This newer lens and my wifes d3100 make for a great travel kit for us.

I too have the 18-55 and (had) the 55-200, but for daily use I stick to the shorter focal length as it's the new compact VR and real nice to carry around as well as taking nice sharp pictures. Means I'm lazy and don't swap lenses much. This new 18-300 looks like the lens I should have had first! Just took delivery (£620) and am looking fwd immensely to testing it. I've already shot several between 18 amd 55mm to compare, and what I have seen looks good.
will post pics later.

The difference between f/5.6 and f/6.3 is a mere 1/3 of an f/stop which is negligible. Small enough that if you were to over- or under-expose by that amount, you would probably not even see it. Here is a handy calculator that will show you the difference. Just put in the two f/ stops and it will calculate the difference in decimal of stops.

Here are just a few photos using this lens from the Hampton Court Flower Show 2014. More in my album...
