I took a dive in the deep end yesterday and ordered...

D800E

300mm f/2.8G

TC 17E II

Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal head II

LensCoat (I got the camo style so I don't "scare" the animals....or at least that's what they claim on their website! lol)

The 800E, TC and head will be here Monday along with the extras that come with the 800E like a monopod, etc., but the lens will be a few days later since I requested an unopened box. I went with the 300mm over the 400mm for a couple of reasons - size, IQ and AF speed. With the 1.7 I'll have the reach of a 510mm while not sacrificing any AF speed but will still be able to fit the lens in my lens bag, something that would not be possible with the 400mm.

I'm not altogether sure how to break the news to the Mrs but I'm thinking it should start with flowers and maybe jewelry? :)

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Who knows, I may be living in my truck for a little while :)

Dave, ol' buddy... I'm gonna do you a solid and bail you out of a bad situation. Send me that old, used-up, worthless D800 of yours and you can use a black Sharpie to cover up that annoying little "e" on your new kit. The wife will never know! It's perfect!!!

I'll even pick up the shipping cause you know... I'm a good egg like that!

You got it, brother!! Unfortunately, shipping from these mountain states can be pretty darn expensive, especially when you figure in handling charges. You sure you're that good of an egg? :)

As for my rational on the E, it's not an attempt to retire the 800 rather it's going to be an association of equals. I plan on keeping the WA's and normal lenses on the 800 and the telephoto's on the E. I'm sick and tired of swapping my telephoto to WA back to a telephoto and back again. I've missed too many shots by either having the wrong lens on or unwilling to switch out the lens on a windy day just to capture a landscape while I'm out birding, not to mention the added gunk getting on my sensor from all the swaps.

I am a little curious on how a gimbal head works. I've never played with one before so I'm hoping it's relatively straight forward. Have you ever used one of these heads?

What brand of screen protector? Is this the best one you would recommend?
Probably not the best but it is the one that is available and it was pretty cheap. I don't see any need in getting a more expensive one. The others that are supposed to be good are being reported of being difficult to attach and remove. Once you installed it and if it is crooked, there goes your $35 screen protector.

That's very impressive. I think maybe start with flowers, then dinner, then jewelry, then maybe an addition to the house......

No way! Drools...

Heheh Glenn, yes I finally have one on order. I was struggling a lot with trying to decide what to get (considered D800e/24 1.4G/Zeiss 135 f2, or Zeiss 55 1.4 Otus, or D4, or 200 f2 VRI) and have always loved this camera and really need a second camera to compliment my D800 for shooting weddings as sometimes I just need something a lot faster. So it is mainly going to be employed in the upcoming wedding season :)

Yesterday I brought home a new lens. A Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 OS HSM APO. I feel like a kid at Christmas, I have not even taken it out of the box yet, just waiting for the right time at home (read wife not around). I can say this, the box it comes in is huge, and weighs a lot. I'll keep you posted.[h=2][/h]
