Why most of the press shoot with Canon and not with Nikon ?

In terms of functionality and the end product (actual images), if the 1DX and D4 are near similar, does it therefore come down to (as you say) how they are marketed - and personal choice?

More Canons out there because they're cheaper.Think of it this way; Canon = Cadillac.....Nikon = Rolls Royce.
Not so, it once was the other way around. but look at the 24-70 70-200 1DX and other cameras and youll see the price is more expensive with canon. more expensive and tey still dominate. Nikon is asleep.

I just got in touch with an incredible photojournalist who was part of a Pulitzer award winning team, and was a finalist himself. He told me that "canon got the technological edge about 15 years ago and a lot of people switched from nikon. now nikon has caught up with canon, but for most it''s too expensive to switch back." This makes perfect sense. It would be an illogical business sense to ditch technology you invested in if it still delivers top-notch photography.

Kinda endorses my opinion (and many others) that they are as good as the other, and simply comes down to personal choice.

Actually Jack I like Canon. They make a first class product. Their QC is much better than Nikon's. Having said that would I switch "No" only because I don't like the feel of the Canon bodies & most importantly Nikon has been very good to me over the past years.I meant cheaper as in not as well built. Jeez! Are you guys Nikon fans or not??
Up here, where I am, on the Kijiji web site, the ratio of Canons to Nikon that are for sale is something like 10 to 1. A lot of people getting rid of their Canons and possibly switching to Nikon? Who knows. Anyway, it's a moot point. Some people like Canons, others like Nikon. Me....I'm Nikon through and through.

I believe many are switching to mirror less cameras. So they're giving up their systems. Mirror less cameras won't replace the dslrs but since they can do most of what the latter can in a smaller and lighter package people are jumping.

when i watch the news on tv in the uk the papparrazi seem to be using mostly nikon of late. ok , a while ago it was mostly canon but not anymore.
I was at a wedding recently and noticed that both photographers were using Canon. Managing to get into conversation with one, I told him I was a Nikon newbie. He said he loved the Nikons when he got into photography, but now as a professional for weddings, he needed to video too. And according to him, there is no question Canon are tops.

Not really adding anything to the argument other than to post a photo I found on the Phoblographer site yesterday that sort of illustrates the point of this question...

This was taken at the funeral of Sen. Frank Lautenberg when they were eulogizing him at Newark Train Station, so it's not just the sports photographers with the white lenses (and even the lone black lens in this shot is a Canon).
I noticed the photo because my brother is the photographer at the far right just behind the state trooper. When I pinged him about it he rattled off the names of most of the other guys as he runs into them all constantly, including Tom Franklin of The Bergen Record (second from left shooting video, believe it or not - it's a changing industry!!) who took the now famous photo of the fireman raising the American flag after the 9/11 attacks.
Just thought I'd share.

For us Nikon users.
Not my photo.
But, he's not shooting Olympus... lol
Personally, I feel that for some of us newer crowd, Nikon is a bit more friendly on the pocket as surprising as it may sound. Lens compatibility of majority of DX bodies is timeless. Even lowest end Nikons indeed look like more serious cameras instead of a plastic box with that embarrassing nipple of a shutter button. Also don't dig that entry level Canons put the dial wheel behind the shutter, forcing you to either shoot or adjust.
Nikon seems to stick to the purist, photo-grapher formula and I like that most of all. Video is cool, and lots of DSLRs are really robust video cameras these days, but still not as good as dedicated ones. I'd rather a camera that takes the best stills and also video than neither to the highest spec possible.

nice catch with that pic. Its not only sports but in the press and weddings as well, canon dominate and like a poster above said, for video they are dominating.
I did a bar mitzvah on wednesday and shot for a good friend i shot weddibgs for yearsback. He also told me many photogs he knows left nikon for canon. And the way he said "SO many left nikon.." It confirmed what i knew.
Nikon is slacking. They need to wake up. I have a feeling this next revenue is going to be their worst. Just a hunch but i could be wrong.
What pissed me off is the lack of aperture control in live view in their cameras basically cripplibg the main feature for video. They shot themselves in the foot. I can understand the sync port on the camera. I say eff it, theres a work around but aperture control, thats screwing yourself. many who considered buying the d610/600 for video work Didnt buy.

From what I picked up in idle chat regarding Canon at Pro sports, the reason is that Canon have a habit of giving their stuff away to pro's at big events (Larger coverage & subliminal advertising)

Not so much giving it away as being there with something to loan for as long as you need it. There have been several times when my brother has had a lens fail and had his "Canon guy" grab one from the trunk and hand deliver it to the sidelines in a matter of minutes.
