Why is the NIKON on the D4 red??? Have they always been this way?
I don't think so since the D4 right behind that one has the NIKON in white. Of course the D3s is totally missing the NIKON. Child with crayons?? ;) Or maybe he did that intentionally so he could quickly tell them apart.

Geoff, if you want a great but not too expensive portrait lens, I'd strongly suggest the 105 2.5 Ais. It's one of Nikon's super portrait lens. And it's sharp, very sharp.

To be honest Marcel I was saying I don't do a lot of portraits. I think if I got something in the range it would have to be macro as well. I keep looking at the Nikkor 105 2.8 and the Tamron 90mm. It would kill two birds with one stone. But hey I'm not buying.

I was just emailing a guy on flicker who seems to use every body ?Nikon makes plus all lenses up to 600mm F4. I asked if he owned a shop and he said no, I've just remortgaged the house three times!!

I'm guessing it's to quickly and easily identify one D4 body from the other? Perhaps there are different custom settings, or one works better with a particular lens, etc.

Now that I've zoomed in on the big photo it looks like there's a GPS or wireless unit on the red D4. Again, when it's stuck in the bag and all you see is the top, knowing the difference by the color makes sense.

Dang, that 300mm f/2.8 is a big honking lens. Maybe I need to rethink that one. LOL

It's small next to the 400mm 2.8. If you think about it that way you can regard it as compact.

First off, Happy Birthday! I hope it was a great one; it sure sounds like it was. Good to hear that you are happy and satisfied with what you have. :)

I hope one day to have all the camera gear I'd like, but in the mean time I need to learn how to use what I have to its fullest.

Geoff - you will eventually get them one purchase at a time. I thought I was good with lenses but I don't see myself slowing down since I just ordered a 24-85mm kit lens but it is not a big purchase.

The only lens that has been elusive is the Nikon 200mm f2 VR lens. If you include my studio equipment, my inventory continues to grow.

You know me only too well Glenn, but I did put a disclaimer at the beginning of this post that I reserve the right to change my mind. I held out and stuck to my guns for a couple of days so I don't think anybody can question my commitment to not buying anything new. Anyway I've spent the last couple of days mulling over the Tamron 90mm Macro and the Nikon 105. My wife has the non VC Tamron and it's great, however on FX the Nikon has a bit more range and more importantly it's compatible with my TC-20e III teleconvertor. I was just about to go out for lunch today when my £260 Nikon cashback card and PIN arrived in the post. Under those circumstances and coupled with a bit of birthday money I don't think this can regarded as my fault. It didn't help that my wife was encouraging me to get it.

My NAS will be OK for a while when my 610 comes in tomorrow. For how long who knows?? I am already deciding to sell or trade my 300s for another 610. I won't know till I see the proof. I am still lacking a good tripod, a 24-75 and a good birding lens.
