NAS cured ?

My NAS will be OK for a while when my 610 comes in tomorrow. For how long who knows?? I am already deciding to sell or trade my 300s for another 610. I won't know till I see the proof. I am still lacking a good tripod, a 24-75 and a good birding lens.

I think I mentioned it in another thread that I didn't end up using my D300 for a year after going FX and I've now replaced it with a D7100. Because the D7100 is better at some things than either the D610 or D800 I've actually been using it quite a bit. I suspect a second D610 may become a bit of an ornament. If I was a pro I may have a different view on that, but as an amateur I can't justify pure spares. I don't have any DX lenses as I'm covered from 16mm up with the FX stuff.

Re: I am pathetic!!

You know me only too well Glenn, but I did put a disclaimer at the beginning of this post that I reserve the right to change my mind. I held out and stuck to my guns for a couple of days so I don't think anybody can question my commitment to not buying anything new. Anyway I've spent the last couple of days mulling over the Tamron 90mm Macro and the Nikon 105. My wife has the non VC Tamron and it's great, however on FX the Nikon has a bit more range and more importantly it's compatible with my TC-20e III teleconvertor. I was just about to go out for lunch today when my £260 Nikon cashback card and PIN arrived in the post. Under those circumstances and coupled with a bit of birthday money I don't think this can regarded as my fault. It didn't help that my wife was encouraging me to get it.

I would be interested to see how the Nikon 105mm f2.8VR micro lens would perform with the new 2x TC. That should give you the equivalent of the Nikon 200mm f4 micro lens.

Eventually, I think once you've tested the great lenses, you will become more selective on which lens you buy and keep as time goes by. The lens purchase that you make now provides temporary relief especially if you avoid photography forums. Depending on the amount of control or self-restrain that you have, you might succeed in keeping your NAS contained. Otherwise, your collection will be similar to mine. Your mileage may vary.

Glenn, I suspect the collection will continue to grow over time, heck if I didn't spend my money on women, cars and cameras I'd only waste it!! In reality a macro lens is the only lens that can do macro so it's a must have in the bag if you ever do that sort of thing, which I do. We already have the Tamron 90mm in the house but I didn't want to resort to fighting my wife for it on a trip we have planned later in the year.

As for the 2x TC I tried it last night. It only interests me as a 210mm macro, not for general photography, as the 70-200 is much better. My initial view was that I will probably use it to increase the camera subject distance rather than double the image size to 2:1. I did try 2:1 last night but the DOF is so small it's hard to tell where you focused. I think the TC also gives a little purple fringing as it does on the 70-200. At 1:1 distance the result looks promising and I will revisit 2:1 when I have a suitable subject.

The bare lens, as you'd expect is so sharp, however the Tamron was also very good. I'm not even going to bother testing them against each other.

Try live view and zoom in using the plus button to verify the focus , turn off live view, then use Mup. Use MF only on a tripod. The tc might come in handy with bugs and butterfly.

Glenn I was on a tripod using live view, but at 15cm away the DOF is a hair or two. I think as you say the bugs and butterfly's are a more likely target.

Why use live view to focus then turn it off for the shot, as live view is MUP inherently?
