LOL,,, they had some upright pipes venting propane gas to fuel the flame on both sides of the track that the riders jumped past.

I was struggling to pre-focus on a spot and then pan with the bike when they flew past me. Got some better shots than that one, but they don't look like the rider is on fire like this one does.

Ken I think the word you are looking for is Methane Gas. What you have here looks like to me is rider jumping past a "Methane flare" (Methane tower flare), common in (closed) landfills to burn off excess Methane gas from the ground trapped underneath.

Looks like your hill climb was at an old landfill of some kind. If it is Methane gas it would be the same gas "Pinto Beans" would produce, but on a much larger scale.

One big Pyroflatulence is the correct name. A "Blue flame fart" or "Blue Angel" are two of the urban nicknames used for this practice. (Don't try this at home.........Pete! lol)

Flatulence produces a mixture of gases with the following six as major components:
Carbon dioxide, Hydrogen, Hydrogen sulfide, Methane, Nitrogen, and Oxygen. Igniting the gases produced by human flatulence, often producing a flame of a blue hue much to the same as a "Methane flare"

So that's today's science lesson boys and girls. Guess I really know my $hit. I should, because for the last 20 years I have been an Illinois Certified Pyrotechnic Operator for Display Fireworks. I shot Forth of July fireworks shows and other displays for different events. If it goes boom or burns, I got the knowledge to make it do it.

Ah, no. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed on the "field". Under the right conditions the Squib's (Electronic Detonators) we use may go off with radio frequencies from cell phone. Cameras are not allowed due to insurance reasons. Believe or not in the case of a mishap that was caused on our part during set up, a camera can document it and an Insurance company would have to pay out a large claim because of it. Is their way of covering themselves? I also have to work my regular job on the forth. I been doing this for 20 years or so, and after over 100 shows I still have all my body parts attached where they belong. I have had quite a few close call stories I can tell you but I won't. I have not shot (worked) a show in three years now for one reason or another and I'm sitting on the sidelines once again this year. The Fourth of July (Fireworks in general I should say) is a very sore subject with me thanks to my ex-wife's meddling :mad:, so I wouldn't hold your breath for seeing any photo's from me anytime soon. Didn't mean to give you my life story, just want you all to know I will not be partaking in any Fireworks festivities / photos and why.

In Montana we call gas from pinto's --- rectane gas. :)

They had a 500 gallon tank of propane and they had two flare stacks set up on the side of the track. Propane companies use them to burn off leftover propane from tanks they need to replace valves on when the safest way is to burn the gas off.

I am in there somewhere on the hill taking pictures with my old Minolta XG7 until it froze up on me. :(

They aslo have a pyro show at the end of the event. :cool:

Almost forgot, they may look like dirt bikes, but they mostly 4 cylinder street bike motors stuffed into modified dirt bike frames and fed nitro.

As visually appealing and aromatic as "Rectane" gas is...
