Is there any similar software (EOS Utility) for Nikon?http://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker/docs/tutorials/usingcanoneosutility

Which camera? It will depend on whether there is an SDK available for third parties to tinker with (I have a D3100 for which no Software Development Kit has been released by Nikon, thereby reducing dramatically what add-ons others can create for it).

As far as I can tell all Nikon's stuff is proprietary, I've wanted to do a couple of projects and there's no information available.

My research into computer-controlled wizardry for astrophotography indicates that some models are supported by some systems/products whereas others are not. I believe this is because of SDKs being available for some and not others. However, I am not an expert. I understand that, for instance, Canon cameras have much better third party software available because Canon are completely (?) open with their APIs.

Happy to stand corrected, though!

Well I'm flabbergasted I obviously need to hone my google skills, there is an awesome C# wrapper for the Nikon SDK that can be found here.
Old dog new tricks...thanks for the heads up!

digiCamControl worked pretty decent for me. I've tried a few android programs that have worked well too, if you have a compatible smartphone/tablet that's another option.

Thank you. That's one of the ones I've looked at. I wanted one that would take Live View but I've since found out that my MBA's HDMI port is output only. I'm playing with stacking now so some form of autofocus tool might work. I'll look again. Thank you.

This uses the USB cable which is the same one that you can use to download the photos to the computer with. It will show you the same thing the camera sees so you really don't need HDMI or live view. It is free so try it and you can see what it does. It has a little bit of a learning curve but not to bad.

Helicon Remote for Android. Works good on my note 8 with my D7100. Full exposure and focus control as well as live view.

No support for the D3100 as Nikon only allow basic USB firmware functionality on that model.

I got all excited but, having been to the download page, now I remember why it isn't for me - not Mac compatible.

The chap in my local camera shop showed me Helicon on his Android phone. My (small) problem with that is that it does all the processing in-camera rather than on the computer. I've since seen that there is a download for Windows/Mac so I might get it just for focus bracketing (which is one of the few things my D7100 doesn't do). That, twinned with Zerene's stacking abilities (unless Helicon also does that - checking now) has me sorted.
