Shearer's Covered Bridge spans the Big Chiques (pronounced Chickies) Creek in Lancaster County. It is one of the few that has horizontal instead of vertical side boards. It also is one of few in the area that has windows (no glass) and is the only one painted all red both inside and out including the approach which is usually white.

WARNING...History Lesson. These two bridges are both over 1 mile long across the Susquehanna River at Wrightsville. On June 28th 1863 Union troops retreating from York burned the wooden bridge that stood where the front bridge stands today. This denied the Confederate Army access to the road to Harrisburg. The Confederates moved back west and eventually rejoined Lee's Army at Gettysburg.
