I took the following photos last night but didn't process them until this afternoon. Of course, night photography means creepy crawly photography. So, here are a few of my results from last night's heebie jeebie photo safari. All photos were taken with my D7000, AF-S 105mm f/.8 micro-Nikkor, ISO 200, f/7.1, and on-camera flash.

This moth is called a rosy maple moth. They are very common in the Eastern U.S. The southern versions are much more colorful than their northern brethren. The color this moth is in the photo is pretty accurate. what attracted me was that it has hot pink legs & feet. Weird. Very weird.

What evening photo excursion is complete without the requisite arachnid images. Here goes. You have been warned. The photos below are two individual labyrinthine orb weaver spiders. We have lots and lots of these guys all over the place. BTW, spiders give me the creeps, except when I look at them through the lens of my camera. If you look closely at the second spider photo, you can see the spinnerets where the web silk comes out.

These two photos will be wonderful creep factors for my students tomorrow. It's known as the high school science teacher's revenge. :)

And after taking all those creep factor photos, I came inside and took photos of nice, pretty, soft, furry felines. These are the feel good photos so I wouldn't have nightmares about spiders all night. :) All three cats were staring at spousal unit as he put some ice cream in a bowl. Need I say more? :)

Same here, plus I have the added benefit that a really gross spider photo will totally creep out most of my students. Ah, the adult's revenge against the adolescent. The funniest are the boys. They want to act all tough and "manly" and guess what? They are the first to be repelled by the ick factor. :)

6-3-13: Part 1

It was a beautiful afternoon after I got out of work. Went walking over to my neighbor's pond and got a few pretty photos. There are no creepy crawlies in this batch.

I love reflections and this one has lots. Also, I think cattails are grossly overlooked.

As I was walking away from the pond, I noticed how the light fell on these ferns. I think ferns are interesting plants anyway.

As I was walking back, through our backyard, I came across this red-winged blackbird. I like them and we have a lot of them around here. And it's a BIF!!! I think these guys are getting tired of seeing me all the time. :)

As I walked through the woods, near enough to the house as to not be noticed by the bear, I came across this old, rotting bench in the woods. I just liked how the fresh, pink flowers contrasted the decay of the bench. The first photo is just conversion of the RAW to jpeg, while the second one is cropped somewhat and in B&W. I like both, but seem to lean toward the color version. As I look at these two photos, they convey entirely different feelings. Opinions and comments gladly accepted.

barbara, do you live in the middle of an old junk yard? You seem to find a lot of discards to shot in your walks. 1 vote for color.

I feel like it sometimes, but, no. I live in a town that does not have trash removal as part of the town services. People have to contract for their own trash removal. Most of the stuff I have found has been in the woods 30 years or more, when it was still legal to dump trash in the woods as a form of garbage removal.

Most people have been using trash removal companies for years, but a few, like my neighbor across the road, still refuses to. On garbage night, after dark, he used to have his children distribute their bags of garbage on the neighbors. I caught them one night, and put the bags of garbage back on his lawn. After that, they didn't use us as free trash removal.

I like the colour in #512 because I like the contrast of the lush green and the new flowers in contrast to the old grey bench  Needs a rustic old wood frame

All around this area are these purple triangular-shaped bug traps. They are being used to trap the invasive insect, the emerald ash borer beetle, which originally came from Asia. These are nasty beetles whose larvae totally destroy ash trees by eating the tree under the bark. I have noticed this particular trap for the past couple of weeks and decided that today was the day to take a photo of the trap, and the sign explaining what it is and why it is there.

If you want to read more about the emerald ash borer beetle, check out the following Web sites:

6-5-13: Part 1: Creepy Crawlers....

This is for everyone who has table saws... If it moves, it is NOT sawdust. This afternoon, I was ready to check out the bluebird houses down the road. Spousal unit asked me to come to the barn (this is not an icky old barn, but Gary's man cave) with my "wide angle lens." He then said there were these tiny spiders in webs all over his table saw. Gary said he knew they were not there yesterday because he had cleaned it after using it. He got very concerned when he noticed that
(1) It was dirty with "sawdust" and
(2) The sawdust started moving, which was rather disconcerting to say the least. :)

So, I went back to get my 105mm micro-Nikkor and check out the 8-legged freaks, oops, I mean spiders.

It turned out that overnight, mama spider spun a bunch of webs on his table saw, and gave birth to all these baby spiders. There must have been hundreds of them. Just looking at them crawling around made me itchy and gave me the heebie jeebies. Be prepared, you have been warned. :)

This photo is not cropped. It's just this mass of many tiny legs. UGH! When I blew on them, they would fall off and drop onto the stool seat below them. Then they would go right up to their web. It looked like they were rappelling in reverse.

Sawdust Moves?

This bunch was on the saw guide. This photo was cropped and these guys are very, very small.

I then asked Gary if he had anything I could measure them with to get a sense of real scale. He gave me a stainless ruler which I put on the stool. I then blew on the web and its contents. A large number of the spiders landed on the stool. These little guys are about 1/8th inch in length (including legs, I think).

They are so creepy I just had to take more photos. Here's another bunch of the brood.

Okay, now for some more pleasant pictures. BIRDS! Tree swallows, to be exact. I love swallows, they are so pretty, graceful, and one of my favorite bird species.

This guy was just popping its head out of the birdhouse. He/she kept looking at me as I slowly got closer. Finally, it flew off and landed on a nearby power line.

And You Are Who?
