I really enjoy following your thread. You are a great photographer.

Thanks. I am enjoying the challenge of at least one photo a day. Sometimes I see something that tells a story or documents something and other times I just find something that I think is interesting. Sometimes, especially in the winter, I have gotten really creative. When all else fails, I always have the opportunistic feline photos. :)

Luckily for me, there was about a 10 minute window with no rain this afternoon after I got home from work. I took a quick walk around the house and found a few opportunities. All photos were taken with my D7000 AF 105mm f/2.8 micro Nikkor, ISO 400, f/10, on-camera flash.

Another attempt at the Russian comfrey.

Ah, the nightshade is starting to bloom.

My day lilies grow in spite of the deer finding them to be tasty treats.

Another day of rain, and raindrops on things. :) I took these this morning after I walked the dog. I had noticed the dew drops on the pine needles and had to run back into the house and grab my camera with macro lens.

I did not notice the fly sitting on a pine needle until I reviewed the morning's photos. There is something about insects, that through a lens, can be very interesting.

Both photos were taken with my D7000; AF 105mm f/2.8 micro Nikkor; ISO 200; f/9 & f/10, respectively; and on-camera flash.

Played with selective color on the fly photo in post #546. I don't use selective color often, but when I do, I like just a touch of color. I thought the fly's eye was perfect for selective color. You can tell the rain is getting to me. :)

It is so nice to have a sunny day after so many dreary days of rain.

We have a new crop of cottontail rabbits that have a nest in some high grass next to the driveway. This little guy had ventured out of his/her warren and was muching away on some clover until I was spotted. I tried to slowly move closer to him/her but right after I took this photo, I was spotted.

We spotted this crane fly on the floor in the barn (note: the barn hasn't had horses in it for at least 15 years). It was already dead but I didn't notice that until spousal unit picked it up. He's much braver than I am when it comes to bugs. :)

I just found the texture and color against the green background interesting.

Sunny afternoons are wonderful, especially when the light paints a subject so well and makes even overgrown grass gone to seed an interesting photo. As an added bonus, check out the two fireflies on the bottom part of the grass.

Back to rainy day photography. :( There does not seem to be any break in sight until tomorrow afternoon with respect to the rain. I will spare you the opportunistic feline photo I usually fall back on in such a situation. Instead, you will get an opportunistic knitting project photo. :)

I was working on this scarf as mindless knitting while some of my students were taking end of the year, state exams. The exams are in just about every subject you can think of. New York State, has been giving these exams for over 100 years. I actually found a scanned in PDF version of the 1889 Earth Science Regents exam on the NY state department of education Web site. It was 13 essay questions. My students would flip if they had to write even one essay let alone 13! Anyway, here's my exam/rainy day knitting photo.

6-14-13: Birds, Birds, Birds.

Okay, I'm breaking today's photos into two groups: Birds, and Other Critters.

I was watching this group of grackles and realized it was an adult grackle and its fledglings. I couldn't resist doing a series, so here goes:
a grackle's version of the family outing.

Hey! Wait for Me!

No One Ever Listens

Okay, now on to robins. We have lots and lots of robins around here. Just before I saw the grackles, I saw a robin having a field day in my neighbor's back lawn, especially since he had just finished mowing the lawn earlier in the day.

I Got Me a Snack

And now, a grey catbird. It's not the greatest photo, but this guy was flitting around. It's my first catbird photo. Hopefully, I'll get better ones later.

6-14-13: Other Critters & Things

First, the obligatory bug photos.

I saw this young bee crawling around inside a buttercup flower.

I have no idea what type of insect this is.

Okay, Now Where?

Can't have nature photos without an obligatory bunny photo once in a while. I slowly crept up on this guy until he/she realized I was getting really close, then he/she went into the bushes.

I'm Invisible, Don't You Know?

This is an orange hawkweed. I always love the vibrance of these flowers:

Taking a closer look at grass seed can be very interesting.

These flower-shots are my taste
Thanks. I love flowers and plants, too, that's why I gave them their own post.

If you really like plant photos, get a hold of a copy of the BBC series, "The Secret World of Plants." It's absolutely phenomenal. The time lapse photos and video are really amazing.

Here are today's photos. They are an odd mix of critters.

When I was on my walk this morning, I noticed that these chickens were hiding under a pine tree. I looked up and then saw what they were hiding from.

Safety Zone

I Know They're Here...
166 Hawk-130615_1.jpg

Smart chickens know when the hawk is around and will take shelter under a tree, in the bushes or in their coop. The dumb ones get culled early in life.

Then down the road, I saw this doe who, once she saw me, started to run. I thought she was going to jump the fence, but in her next stride, she turned 90 degrees and ran along the fence. Talk about being handy!

Gotta Go
166 Deer-130615_1.jpg

Later in the afternoon, I walked out on the porch, and there was the same rabbit as yesterday, in almost the same spot. This time I got a view from above.

Just Waiting
166 Rabbit-130615_1.jpg

All photos were taken with my D3000, 55-200mm non-VR zoom, ISO 200, ISO 200 except for the rabbit: ISO 400, most were shot at f/6.3 or f/8, shutter speeds varied.
