This is one of my first few efforts to capture a bird in flight, any helpful hints would be appreciated. Unfortunately all I had with me was my 50mm lens as I was out shoooting landscapes.

Good try. Birds in flight is something that takes a lot of pratice and a longer lens. If you post your setting with your pictures we may be able to give you some suggestions.

The D90 is a very capable camera so you are fine there.
You need to use a long lens if you have one. Longer the better.
I will assume you are panning when you take the shot, if not, you need to be.
I would suggest using a faster shutter speed. At least 1/250 sec. Longer the focal length the higher the speed needed.
If needed use a higher ISO to get a faster shutter speed.
I personally use single point focus point when shooting.
This is what works for me and other responses my differ. There are many ways to achieve the same thing so others may give you different ideas. You need to experiment and see what works for you.

Here are my latest BIF photos. On my way home, I stopped at a pond that is down the road from me. While watching the geese, I was able to get some BIF of a crow. I had to crop these photos a lot but I am pretty happy with them. At least they are not just a blur of feathers.
