Next I stopped and shot these guys. The grass in front of them looks way over bright and they look dull so I'm guessing my time of day was wrong :(
I gave up trying to edit it as it didn't help and made it worse than my original so here's the uncropped unedited version
ISO 200 35mm 0ev f3.5 1/800 I thought since they were moving I'd use the same theory as bird in flight and wanted fast shutter Ugh

After getting home and being disappointed with this mornings tries at wildlife, I found these birds on my way back into town to pick up my kids. Unfortunately the birds stayed out of good reach of my lens so not much better :(

Smarty pants! I know I'm the worst typer and should recheck before I hit enter :) I was headed into town to pick up my kids from school but on the way I stopped to try to capture the birds which I'm thinking are osprey but could be totally wrong.

Run on sentences are my specialty :)

My daughter and wife are very into words and my son was in human intelligence (MI) in the Army so I have ot be very careful how I word things. When I read your post I say that Video that was on the internet a while back where the eagle swoops in and picks up a baby and fly off.

you need to bump up your iso to get a higher shutter speed. Shutter speed should be higher than you focal length. 300mm - start at 400 shutter speed. When the birds are moving crank the shutter speed higher 1500

Well you shot them in RAW so now all you have to do is process them!

I used one of your jpegs in the post...hdr'd it...and came up with this...

Ahhh! Nikonpup as soon as I read your post I groaned out loud because I should have known that ugh! One day this will just come to me in the mean time its frustrating and thank god I'm learning in the digital era or I'd go broke buying film for all my learning screw ups LOL I had my shutter speed up because he was bouncing on those branches and I kept thinking he just might take off on me but nope just kept bouncing. Thanx for responding as now I understand what I did and will watch more carefully next time

Thanx Eyelevel That white tree to the left of him was just soooo white its distracting and I couldn't get it to tone down without losing definition on the eagle. I even gave it a try in Aperture but couldn't do anything with that tree without cropping then the crazy branch to the right of him which I thought was cool in real life became glarey and distracting in my photo as well. I haven't tried HDR I don't think its an option in my old version of Aperture but that white tree trunk is MUCH better!

Yeah I had a closer look Marilynne and not sure if I had 2 different types of birds there or different male/female wind patterns?? If you look at the first photo its quite white underneath (original target) and the third photo is quite dark underneath. The first one was what caught my eye up in a tree so the first 2 pics are of it then the 2nd bird showed up and they were circling and circling up around the trees. We often have red tailed hawks up here sitting on our fence so that could be it as well. Seemed larger than hawk though and I know there's an osprey nest not too far up the river. Could have been something completely different as well.

Today is dark, dreary and snowy again so worked with my shutter and iso. I preferred the higher iso and shutter speed of this one as it looks like what I see with my eye only frozen :)

Yep guess I REALLY gotta clean my sensor :)

Not what I'd planned to post but thought it was fun and it took far more attempts and planning to finally get these shots
Was headed to bed but had to check incubator as ducklings should hatch this Saturday but I'm thinking we'll have ducklings before that! 3 have broken up into the air cell so they'll be out soon.

The black thing up in the light is the fully formed duck bill inside the air cell of the egg shell. It was pecking and trying to catch the light I was shining in. Not sharp because duckling is alive peeping and moving but the magic of life is pretty fantastic :)

One of my trys that wasn't too bad with hubby holding egg on my iphone for me
