So I just purchased a D4 and took it out on a session. Loved it. LOVED IT. I was using a D7100..... whoa big difference. So I imported through lightroom, made some color adjustments and exported with my same file settings (100% quality 350 dpi) My file inside lightroom was 4928x3280, I checked it on camera, same size. However, when I exported via lightroom, my files were half the size as my D7100 were producing. My average size on the D7100 was around 11-13MB and my D4 exported at roughly 4-6MB. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Nikon with no answer... I was hoping someone who actually shoots with a D4 can help me?! Thanks you thank you xoxo
I'm not looking for bigger files, and we have established the 16v24 size difference. I understand all of that-- my concern is that I purchased this camera refurbished (always a gamble with Nikon's 30 policy v Cannon's 1 year policy) so I want to make sure it is functioning properly in my 30 day window. I looked at page 444 which suggests my files should be twice as large as I am getting. However when I pull an exported image back into lightroom, the file dimensions (4928x3280) are unchanged. I'm ok sounding like my blonde self if, in the end of the day, I'm not out 4 grand.
Thanks for your help!!!!! You pointed out info Nikon specialists didn't even understand! xoxo
Provided that the file that you get on your memory card is
- both RAW
- is about 2/3 (i.e. 16/24) size on the D4, compared to the file on the D7100
then there should be basically nothing wrong with your camera.
Differences regarding the filesize could eventually come from two other issues:
- a very rich detail capture vs an almost flat capture - however filesize differences should not be huge
- if you are mounting a DX lens, your camera can go into DX mode (I suppose the D4 does) and only take the center part of your capture (this, you would realize it with a lower number of pixels (about 44% of the total pixels of your sensor (i.e. 6.4M pixels)) - i don't thinkthis is what you are reporting in your post.
Any other difference that you find, other than the file on the memorycard (f.i. output of Lightroom), is unlikely to be linked to your camera.
Btw. You mention page 444 of a manual, but not having the manual didn't allow me to relate to that
Post edit: remembered that the D4 does offer also a compressed NEF file, which the D7100 doesn't - so please check that the D4 settings for the RAW file (NEF) are uncompressed, if you want to compare filesizes.
