Apparently not.

My opinion is that's a lot of money for a specialty DX lens. It's the DX equivalent of the 70-200mm f/2.8 (a little more reach), but when you approach $1000 you start wondering if there's more flexible glass for the money. I can see why there aren't a lot of people with them, but I suspect that if you're married to DX and want a flexible portrait zoom that this would work.

I looked at them too but there is no advantage to it compared to the 70-200mm unless you need the wide end in this lens. It is the same as a 70-200/2.8 lens unliked the previous generation.

I bought one when Sigma had it on sale with instant rebates. It's a great lens; quite possibly the sharpest and best telephoto in that range you can get for DX. I like it better than the 70-200 for DX because it's a bit wider. The 70-200 is about 105 at the wide end and the 50-150 is 75. And that's a significant difference. It also mates well with one of the 17-50s or the Nikon 17-55. I use it with the 17-50 on my D7100 where that sharpness really helps. The downside is that it is DX only so if you have or are planning to get an FX camera you can't use it. That doesn't bother me as I have the 70-200 f/4 for FX. Here's the DXO scores for telephoto zooms on the D7100...look at #1 on the list. I believe in putting the best glass I can afford on the higher res cameras which is why I bought this lens. Sure it's DX only but I'll always have use for DX so I know I'll use this lens.

Guys..I am so tempted..I have found a place that's reputable that is selling this lens for $850 shipped ...Brand New...That is $100 cheaper than Amazon...Thoughts?..You all know I have been itching to complete my long end with a zoom lens that is 2.8...

It sounds like a winner for DX. Essentially giving you the 70-200 range for DX and keeping it fast AND sharp. Not sure how I feel about the price. If I knew that I would stay DX then I wouldn't think twice. But if I felt that I would eventually go to FX then I'd have to weigh my options (when am I going to FX, will I do both DX and FX, etc.)

The place you want to order from, do they allow for a 30 day return? If so I'd do it for sure. It might cost you about $30 to ship it back but I think that's a fair price to get hands on knowledge.

Hmmm, well that stinks. That discourages the return option.

Do you have a local shop that you can heft it around and take a look at it? What about renting the lens? If neither of those are an option then I say just buy it. I'm guessing you've read everything you can about this lens so you at least have an idea how it rates with the general public. You're aware of the DX vs FX deal. If you're okay with all of that then what the heck... go out and get it.

My last argument that I always use is, more than likely you'll get a decent amount back if you decide to sell the lens a year or two later. So if you buy the lens for $900, use the heck out of it and sell the lens a year or two later you'll get a decent portion back so it's not like throwing away money. It's all relative. ;)

Ok guys..Ordered this lens 30 minutes ago....Wooo Hooo
Hope it is everything the reviews say it is..I know I will be with my D7100 for years to come..So I pulled the trigger...This will complete my lens collection on the long end...Sigma rumours said they had no plans of replacing this lens anytime soon..Will keep you guys posted on my findings of this lens..

Looking forward to your review on it. I was thinking of getting that as well to complete my collection of fast zooms but it is huge for a DX zoom and I don't think I need a huge fast telephoto zoom.

Yep..Im pumped..No bigger then the FX Glass..Seen what it can do on Flickr attached to a D90..So Striving for even sharper images on my d7100..The shots look super sharp on the D90...

Yeah same size as 70-200mm/2.8 lenses and for a telephoto I think I need more reach more than the f/2.8 for the outdoor and wildlife photography I want to do.

I think it's a good buy too, congrats. I think it's pretty smart for Sigma to make a lens in that range that matches the 70-200 for FX. I don't know if the other manufacturers make a lens in that range/speed but it seems smart to me. DX is alive and well and so it makes sense to make a lens that matches the FX 70-200. Although I've moved to FX, I'm pretty sure I'll always have a DX so that's a great lens to keep.
