Can't get pictures off unformatted card now

Can someone please help me? I'm out of state on a 4-day photo job for an oil and gas company and I put in a memory card into my D300 that I haven't used in a long time. I took pictures for a couple of hours and then suddenly it wouldn't let me take another photo. When I looked at my camera, it was giving me a "FOR" message, meaning "Format."

I had viewed the photos numerous times throughout the couple of hours, so I KNOW the photos were there. But, now I cannot view them on my camera, NOR can I load them to my laptop. It just wants me to format the card, which of course, I do not want to do because I can't loose all my photos (that can't be retaken.)

Any suggestions on how to retrieve these photos?

Sounds like the "did not format memory card in camera" syndrome. Well, you could try a file retrieval software, there are a few free ones online. Beyond that, i could only suggest to take the card to disk recovery specialist. If that does not work, then it's fubar.

What they said ^ - as long as you haven't overwritten anything on the card, and the card isn't physically damaged, the files should still be there.

And in future, Angie, ALWAYS check to see if there's anything on the card before you actually use it. Also, reformat the card before you actually have to use it. Saves you the grief you're going through now.
